Application of the theory of agenda setting to explain the development of economic indicators

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahem nastolování agendy a vývojem obchodování na kapitálových trzích. Jejím cílem je vysvětlit vzájemný vztah mezi počtem zmínek o společnosti ve zpravodajství a cenou a objemem obchodovaných akcií na burze. Výzkum pěti firem, které jsou obchodovány na českých burzách (AAA Auto, Fortuna, Metrostav, Orco a Philip Morris), probíhal v rozmezí tří měsíců. Pomocí výzkumu se nepodařilo potvrdit kauzální vztah mezi mediální agendou a vývojem kurzů na burze, s výjimkou období zveřejňování hospodářských výsledků. Ze studie vyplývá významný vliv dalších proměnných, které mohou vstupovat do zkoumaného vztahu a tím ho ovlivňovat. Pro další výzkum je nutné zahrnout vliv investičních strategií, které si obchodníci na burze vědomě či nevědomě volí.

Abstract:

This thesis concerns the relationship between agenda-setting and development of trading on the financial markets. Its aim is to explain mutual relationship between number of mentions in the coverage about the company and prices of stocks and traded volume stocks on the stock market. The research of five companies was done during three months and dealt with companies, which are traded on the Czech stock market (AAA Auto, Fortuna, Metrostav, Orco and Philip Morris). It was not possible to confirm a causal relationship between media agenda and development of the stock market from the research. There was exception during the period of announcing the financial results of previous periods. The study showed a significant effect of other variables that may enter into the examined relationship and influence it. It is necessary to include the effects of investment strategies that are used by traders (intentionally or not) for further research.
