Polarization of Party Systems in Central and Eastern Europe - Verification of Basic Theoretical Approaches

Abstract:

Polarizace v politologii představuje jeden z nejdůležitějších pojmů, díky kterému lze určit mechanismus a dynamiku stranických systémů. Tento pojem označuje ideologickou vzdálenost mezi relevantními stranami, které vstupují do interakce nejčastěji na parlamentní úrovni. Tento nástroj byl teoreticky popsán v šedesátých letech italským politologem a sociologem Giovannim Sartorim a stal se součástí klasické politologie, který je do dnešní doby hojně používán. Tato polarizace, čili ideologická vzdálenost, bude zkoumána ve stranickém systému České republiky. Vývoj tohoto systému stran bude analyzován od jeho počátků, tedy od roku 1990, do roku 2010, kdy probíhaly poslední parlamentní volby. Polarizace dané soustavy stran bude zkoumána jak z kvalitativního, tak z kvantitativního pohledu. Z výsledků této analýzy bude učiněna charakteristika, která by systém stran přiřadila do specifického typu dle Sartoriovy typologie stranických systémů.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to analyze the development of the polarization in the Czech party system since early 1990. The result will be an evaluation of the level of polarization in the period of twenty years and a classification of the party system according to Giovanni Sartori´s typology. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to the etymology, aspects, measurements and logic of the term polarization, an introduction to Sartori´s typology, a critical review of key traits of this typology as well as alternative typologies on party systems. The second part contains both a description of the area of the Czech Republic, its specifications and issues, and basic information on methods, used in the thesis. The third and last part is related to analysis. First, the progress of the Czech party system will be presented from a qualitative view including the evaluation of all features, described in the first part. Next, two quantitative methods are employed: the content analysis of party manifestos and party positions in the competition model aggregated from questionnaire surveys. This is followed by the analysis of the data and findings produced by the methods. The findings include the progress, tendencies, aspects as well as the possible future developments of the Czech party system. The last subsection is the evaluation of party system as a whole and it focuses on the research on party system in general and its future in political science.
