A Contrastive Description of the Standard Pronunciation of Dutch and Czech from the Perspective of Czech learners of Dutch

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce si klade za cíl podat konfrontační popis kultivované výslovnosti nizozemštiny a češtiny z pohledu českého mluvčího na základě srovnání artikulačních bází nizozemštiny a češtiny, inventářů hlásek obou zkoumaných jazyků a zákonitostí jejich spojování. Představuje nizozemštinu v systému germánských jazyků a věnuje se problematice standardu současné nizozemštiny a existenci jejích dvou evropských standardů a jejich uplatnění a využití. V empirické části práce autorka analyzuje soubor nahrávek a zaměřuje se na míru zvládnutí vokálů a diftongů nizozemštiny českými mluvčími.

Abstract:

The objective of this dissertation is to offer a comparative description of the Standard Dutch and Czech from a perspective of Czech learners of Dutch. The author compares the articulatory settings of Dutch and Czech and the inventory of vocals and consonants are compared with the objecitve to show the main differences between both languages. The author also examines the differences in basic suprasegmental phonetic processes in the languages in question. Further is Dutch introduced as a West Germanic language and is compared to its West Germanic realtives. Also the situation of the existence of two standard varieties of Dutch, namely Netherlands Dutch (also Northern Dutch) and Belgian Dutch (also Southern Dutch) is discussed as well as their position in both Dutch speaking areas as well as their use and position. In the emipirical part the author analyses a set of recordings in order to show how the Czech speakers of Dutch acquire the vocals and diphthongs of Dutch.
