The Gothic Atmosphere of Sheridan Le Fanu: Ambiguity and the Limits of Interpretation

Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce se bude zabývat gotickou estetikou v dílech Sheridana Le Fanu, přičemž se zaměří především na jeho novelu Carmilla a vybrané povídky ze sbírky In a Glass Darkly. Bude zkoumat, jak Le Fanu přizpůsobuje a nově interpretuje prvky gotické tradice v rámci svého osobitého vypravěčského stylu. Prostřednictvím důkladné analýzy textu a zkoumání gotické teorie bude práce rovněž analyzovat, jak Le Fanu využívá a transformuje specifické rysy gotické literatury k vytvoření své vlastní charakteristické atmosféry tajemna a napetí.

Abstract:

This thesis will explore the Gothic aesthetic in the works of Sheridan Le Fanu, focusing primarily on his novella Carmilla (1872) and selected short stories from In a Glass Darkly. It will examine how Le Fanu adapts and reinterprets elements of the Gothic tradition within his distinct narrative style. Through close reading and engagement with Gothic theory, the thesis will also analyze how Le Fanu employs and transforms specific features of Gothic literature to create his own characteristic atmosphere of mystery and unease.
