Minorite Monastery and the Church of St. Johns in Brno. The Middle Ages

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá středověkým uměním v brněnském minoritském klášteře a kostele, přičemž se snaží na základě dobových pramenů a archeologických a restaurátorských průzkumů začlenit dochované památky do kulturněhistorického kontextu areálu. Největší pozornost se soustředí na díla pevně spjatá se středověkou architekturou, která tak s větší určitostí vypovídají o svém původním umístění a funkci. Kromě drobnějších architektonických detailů se jedná především o raně gotický portál do kapitulní síně, pozdně středověkou hrobku a nástěnné malby v ambitu kláštera. Prostor je věnován také ostatním (movitým) zde dochovaným středověkým památkám, které však můžeme zatím, vzhledem k nedostatku dobových zpráv, chápat pouze jako solitéry bez konkrétního vztahu k samotnému minoritskému klášteru.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the art of the middle ages in the Minorite Monastery and church in Brno and, based on sources in the context of the times and archeological excavations and conservationist researches, tries to incorporate the preserved monuments into the cultural and historical context of the specified premises. The thesis focuses mainly on the pieces of art closely connected to the medieval architecture; reason for this being that they depict their previous placing and function in the most accurate way. Not mentioning the subtle architectonic details, the described pieces of art are early Gothic portal of the capitular hall, late medieval crypt and wall paintings in the ambulatory of the monastery. There is also some space devoted to the rest of the medieval pieces of art (now the movable ones), preserved here in the monastery. As there is lack of information in the context of the times, regarding these movable objects, we can, for the time being, only perceive them as mere solitaires having no particular connection to the Minor monastery itself.
