UN interventions. The case study of Iraq

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá otázkou úspěšnosti mírových misí OSN, které jsou vysílány za účelem ukončení konfliktů a zajištění mezinárodního míru a bezpečnosti. V práci jsou vysvětleny pojmy peacemaking, peacekeeping, peacebuilding a uvedena pravidla i funkce mírových misí. Dále jsou představena kritéria hodnocení úspěšnosti misí autorů Pushkinová, van der Lijn a Diehl a Druckman, přičemž evaluační rámec Diehla a Druckmana je vybrán jako výchozí pro případovou studii Iráku. Případová studie seznamuje čtenáře s historickým kontextem v podobě invaze do Iráku v roce 2003, zkoumá aktivity OSN v zemi a analyzuje asistenční misi UNAMI dle zvolených kritérií s pomocí materiálů OSN, informací z neziskových organizací a údajů ze statistických portálů. Na závěr hodnotí její úspěšnost na základě výsledků této analýzy.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the question of the success rate of UN peacekeeping missions that are sent out to end conflicts and ensure international peace and security. The thesis explains concepts of peacemaking, peacekeeping, peacebuilding and states rules as well as functions of peacekeeping missions. Further, the criteria for evaluating the success of missions by authors Pushkin, van der Lijn and Diehl and Druckman are presented, Diehl and Druckman's evaluation framework being selected as the starting point for the case study of Iraq. The case study introduces readers to the historical context in the form of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, examines UN activities in the country and analyses the UNAMI assistance mission according to the criteria chosen, using UN material, information from non-profit organizations and data from statistical portals. Finally, it assesses its success based on the results of this analysis.
