Geopolitics of Iran and its activities in Iraq and Syria.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se snaží přiblížit íránské aktivity v Iráku a Sýrii, prostřednictvím kterých se Írán snaží šířit a posilovat svůj vliv v regionu. Práce se zaměřuje na Irák a Sýrii z toho důvodu, že v obou zemích se Írán angažuje zcela veřejně. Zároveň jsou jeho aktivity v Iráku a Sýrii součástí oficiální zahraniční politiky Íránu. Írán hrál již během historie důležitou roli v regionu, a i nadále je patrné, že se snaží uplatňovat svůj vliv v Blízkovýchodním regionu. Důležitou zemí je díky své rozloze, poloze, populaci, a především díky surovinovému bohatství. V regionu Blízkého východu neexistuje silný lídr, který by dokázal zajistit bezpečnost a stabilitu oblasti. Získat vůdčí roli v regionu je výzvou a stát se tak regionální mocností je otázka prestiže a velká výzva. Regionální mocnost má možnost naplňovat své národní zájmy v rámci celého regionu. V současné době se o pozici nejsilnější mocnosti v regionu Blízkého východu usilují Írán a Saudská Arábie. Přičemž obě země jsou v určitých oblastech limitovány. První část práce se věnuje definici a vymezení regionu, ve kterém se Írán snaží uplatňovat svůj vliv. Dále je analyzována zahraniční politika a její vývoj od počátku 20. století. Zde je patrné, že Írán se snažil šířit svůj vliv již během historie. S Irákem spojuje Írán šíitský islám a Sýrie představuje tradičního spojence Íránu v oblasti Blízkého východu. Nepřátelské vztahy mezi Irákem a Íránem panovali až do svržení režimu Saddáma Husajna v roce 2003. Tato událost odstranila dlouhodobého nepřítele Íránu a vytvořila prostor pro šíření íránského vlivu. Od roku 2003 spolupracuje Írán s Irákem v ekonomické, politické i kulturní oblasti. Tyto aktivity se ještě více rozrostly po roce 2011, kdy Irák opustili americké vojenské jednotky. Naproti Iráku je Sýrie dlouhodobým spojencem Íránu, a to i během irácko-íránské války. Írán dlouhodobě podporuje vládu Asadů. Írán pomáhal syrské armádě v boji proti povstaleckým skupinám i proti Islámskému státu. Bez této pomoci je zřejmé, že Asadův režim padl.

Abstract:

The aim of this Master's Thesis is to zoom in on Iranian activities in Iraq and Syria, through which Iran tries to increase its influence in the region. The reason why the Thesis focuses on Iraq and Syria is the way, in which Iran is openly getting involved with both countries. At the same time, those activities in Iraq and Syria are part of the official Iranian foreign policy. The country has always played an important part in the region, and it is appearant that it continues to influence the Middle East. The importance of Iran originates in its size, position, population and especially its resources. No strong leader exists in the Middle East to ensure stability and safety to the region. Gaining leadership is a question of great prestige, because of how difficult it is. A regional power has the authority to enforce its national interests within the entire region. Currently, Iran and Saudi Arabia strive to become the mightiest power in the Middle East, while both countries are somewhat limited in certain aspects. The first part of the Thesis defines the region of Iran's scope of influence. It is followed by an anylysis of Iran's foreign policy, as well as a description of its evolution from the beginning of 20th century. As is evident, Iran has tried to influence the region during recent history. Iraq is related with Iran by Shia Islam, while Syria represents a traditional Iran's ally of in the Middle Eastern region. Up until 2003, when the regime of Saddam Hussein was overthrown, Iran and Iraq had rather unfriendly relationship. The death of Iraq's president removed a long-term enemy of Iran, and therefore facilitated the spreading of Iranian influence. Since 2003, Iran has cooperated with Iraq in economic, political and cultural domains. These activities intensified after the year 2011, when the American military quit Iraq. Unlike Iraq, Syria has been a long-term ally of Iran, including the time during the Iran-Iraq War. Iran has also supported the Assads' administration. Iran helped the Syrian military fight both the rebel groups and the Islamic State. It is clear that Assad's regime has fallen without this support.
