Nanosilver and study of its influence on invertebrates

Abstract:

Nanotechnologie je v poslední době rychle se vyvíjející vědní obor s obrovským potenciálem využití v medicíně, biologických odvětvích, chemickém, stavebním nebo strojírenském průmyslu. Využívá částice o velikosti 1 – 100 nm (1 nm = 10-9 m). V biotechnologickém odvětví se využívají hlavně nanočástice stříbra kvůli jejich antimikrobiálním vlastnostem. Nejrozšířenější směry výroby nanočástic stříbra jsou metody top-down, bottom-up a green synthesis. Top-down postupy jsou rychlé a nezatěžují životní prostředí, ale jsou drahé. Bottom-up metody jsou jednoduché a často používané, ale pracují s nebezpečnými látkami. Takto vytvořené nanočástice obsahují rezidua těchto látek, které brání použití v biologii a medicíně. Metody green synthesis jsou levné, rychlé, jednoduché a nepoužívají nebezpečné látky, což z nich činí v současnosti nejpoužívanější metody pro výrobu nanočástic stříbra. Nanočástice vyrobené různými postupy mají odlišné vlastnosti, proto je důležité vědět, jak byly dané nanočástice vytvořeny. Další část práce se zabývá vlivem nanočástic stříbra na bezobratlé organismy. Tito živočichové představují 97 % všech druhů na Zemi a jejich ohrožení by znamenalo nebezpečí pro celý ekosystém. Popisuje působení nanočástic jak na půdní, tak vodní druhy bezobratlých. Vodní druhy jsou přitom ohroženější kvůli snadnému a rychlému transportu stříbrných nanočástic v tekutém prostředí. Na základě provedené literární rešerše se ukazuje, že tyto dopady jsou většinou nepříznivé. Nanočástice stříbra se mohou usazovat v buňkách, indukovat apoptózu, vytvářet reaktivní kyslíkové metabolity, poškozovat DNA nebo snižovat reprodukční schopnost. Současné studie zkoumají vliv nanočástic na bezobratlé v časovém horizontu asi 1 měsíce. Chybí tedy dlouhodobé studie vlivu nanočástic stříbra na bezobratlé organismy. Srovnání jednotlivých prací je také obtížné, protože každý autor používá nanočástice vyrobené jiným způsobem a tím pádem s odlišnými vlastnostmi.

Abstract:

Nanotechnology is rapidly evolving science with a great potential for application in medicine, biological industry, chemical, construction and engineering industry. It works with particles of 1 - 100 nm (1 nm = 10-9 m). In the biotechnology sector, mainly silver nanoparticles are used because of their antimicrobial qualities. The most common ways of production of silver nanoparticles are methods of top-down, bottom-up and green synthesis. The top-down processes are fast and saving the environment, but they are expensive. The bottom-up methods are simple and frequently used, but work with hazardous substances. Thus, formed nanoparticles contain residues of these substances that inhibit use in biology and medicine. The green synthesis methods are cheap, quick, simple and do not use dangerous substances, these attributes make these methods the most widely used for the production of silver nanoparticles. Nanoparticles produced by different methods have different qualities therefore it is important to know how the nanoparticles were created. The next part of the thesis deals with the influence of silver nanoparticles to invertebrates. These animals represent 97 % of all species on the Earth and their threat would mean danger for the entire ecosystem. The thesis describes the effect of nanoparticles to both soil and aquatic invertebrate species. Aquatic species are more vulnerable because of easy and rapid transport of silver nanoparticles in the liquid environment. Based on the literature review, it turns that these impacts are usually negative. Silver nanoparticles can accumulate in cells, induce apoptosis, create reactive oxygen species, cause DNA damage and reduce fertility. The current studies explore the influence of nanoparticles on invertebrates in the time frame of about one month. So there are missing the long-term studies of the effects of silver nanoparticles to invertebrates. The comparison of the outcomes is also difficult, because different authors use nanoparticles produced in different way and thus with different qualities.
