Contamination analysis of sediments from historical channels of the Bílina River

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na vyhledání historického znečištění v nivních sedimentech řeky Bíliny. Pro analýzu bylo vybráno znečištění organickými polutanty (PAU) a rizikovými prvky (Cu, Zn, Pb). Nejprve však bylo potřeba pomocí nástrojů GIS vyhledat polohu původních koryt a zjistit, kdy docházelo v jednotlivých úsecích řeky k regulacím. Na základě provedených analýz se zjistila, kudy dříve koryto protékalo, a na nich byly vybrány tři lokality, kde proběhlo následně vzorkování. Organické polutanty byly zpracovány pomocí extrakční metody QuEChERS a následně analyzovány na plynovém chromatografu s hmotnostním detektorem, doplněné o TOC analýzu. Rizikové prvky se analyzovaly pomocí rentgenové fluorescenční spektrometrie a výsledky byly přepočítány a vyhodnocovány jako lokální faktory nabohacení (LEF). Pomocí hloubkových profilů byly odhaleny historické kontaminace, tedy ještě z doby před regulacemi toku. Nalezeny zde byly například vysoké hodnoty kontaminace mědi (dosahovala zde až pětinásobku v porovnání s průměrným složením svrchní zemské kůry) společně s koncentrací lehkých PAU. Po proudu řeky však tato kontaminace klesala. Naopak hodnoty těžkých PAU a kontaminace zinkem rostly. V poslední odběrové lokalitě po proudu řeky byla nalezena velká kontaminace olovem, která přesahovala průměrné složení svrchní zemské kůry až 20krát. Výsledky jsou ukazatelem toho, že historické znečištění se v původních korytech nachází a jejich případná reaktivace v rámci rekultivací krajiny by mohla být velmi nebezpečná. Znečištění je zřejmě původem hlavně z těžebního a chemického průmyslu v regionu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the search for historical pollution in alluvial sediments of the Bílina River. The pollution with organic pollutants (PAHs) and hazardous elements (Cu, Zn, Pb) was selected for analysis. First, however, it was necessary to use GIS tools to locate the location of the original riverbeds and to determine when regulation occurred in the different sections of the river. Based on the analyses performed, the locations where the channel used to flow were identified and three sites were selected where subsequent sampling was carried out. Organic pollutants were processed using the QuEChERS extraction method and subsequently analyzed on a gas chromatograph with a mass detector, supplemented by TOC analysis. Risk elements were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and the results were recalculated and evaluated the local LEF enrichment factor. The depth profiles were used to detect historical contamination, i.e., from the time period prior to the river engineering. For example, high levels of copper contamination (up to five times the average composition of the upper crust) were found here, together with concentrations of light PAHs. This contamination decreased downstream. In contrast, heavy PAH and zinc contamination increased. At the last sampling site downstream, high lead contamination was found, which exceeded the average composition of the upper crust by up to 20 times. The results are an indicator that historical contamination is present in the original channels and their potential reactivation as part of landscape reclamation could be very dangerous. The pollution is apparently mainly from the mining and chemical industries in the region.
