The Band and the Birth of Americana

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to introduce the American-Canadian band The Band, whose importance is seen in influencing the work of musicians of the sixties. In addition to the overall development of the band, key events that led to the subsequent success of the band and their members are described. A brief historical context of the 1960s in America is also included to better understand the subject matter. The methodology of the thesis is based on a research study of sources. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part aims to introduce the musical styles of the 1960s and explain the concept of Americana. The second part introduces The Band in their early days, including the key figures who contributed to the development of each member's musical experience. Also included is a exploring of the stories that took place during the Band's time on the road with Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan. The final section looks at the band's peak era during their solo career, describing both their first and last live performances.

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je představit americko-kanadskou kapelu The Band, jejíž význam spatřujeme v ovlivěnění tvorby hudebníků šedesátých let. Kromě celkového vývoje kapely jsou popsány i stěžejní události, které vedly k následnému úspěchu kapely a jejich členů. Pro lepší uchopení problematiky je součástí této práce též stručný historický kontext šedesátých let dvacátého století v Americe. Metodologie práce je založena na rešeršním studiu pramenů. Páce je rozdělena na tři částí. První část má za úkol přiblížit hudební styly šedesátých let a vysvětlit pojem Americana. Druhá část představuje kapelu The Band v jejich začátcích, včetně klíčových osobností, kteří se podíleli na rozvoj hudebních zkušeností jednotlivých členů. Součástí je i vyprávění příběhů, které se odehrály za dobu cestování kapely s Ronniem Hawkinsem a Bobem Dylanem. Finální část se věnuje vrcholné éře kapely za dobu jeji sólové dráhy, popisující jak jejich první, tak i poslední živé vystoupení.
