Performance of children with specific developmental learning disabilities in selected diagnostic methods

Abstract:

This master´s thesis concerns the outline of the cognitive performance of children with specific learning disabilities in the Wechsler intelligence scale WISC-IIISK and Bender-Gestalt test. Average performances in the mentioned tests were analyzed in 105 children ages 6.9 – 15.9 (70.5% boys, 29.5% girls) diagnosed with specific learning disabilities. In the majority of examined cases, the intellectual abilities of children with these disabilities were in the range of average, alternatively, on the level of higher average. The least challenging subtest on the level of WICS-IIISK subtests for children with learning disabilities was the verbal subtest Similarities. On the other hand, the most challenging subtest proved to be the performance subtest Coding. The appearance of the SCAD cognitive profile was confirmed throughout the whole sample, emphasizing the typical cognitive deficits associated with these disorders. The performance of children with specific learning disabilities in the Bender-Gestalt test proved to be significantly below average, with the most frequent problems in the relative positioning of the individual parts of redrawn figures. The outcome of this thesis has a significant application potential, and beyond the afore-established knowledge, it also points out the limitations of the diagnostic tools used in practice.

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práca sa zaoberá popisom obrazu kognitívneho výkonu detí so špecifickými poruchami učenia vo Wechslerovej inteligenčnej škále WISC-IIISK a Bender-Gestalt teste. Priemerné výkony v týchto testoch boli analyzované pre 105 detí vo veku 6.9 – 15.9 rokov (70.5% chlapcov, 29.5% dievčat), u ktorých boli diagnostikované špecifické poruchy učenia. Intelektové schopnosti detí s týmito poruchami, sa vo väčšine analyzovaných prípadov pohybovali v pásme priemeru, prípadne vyššieho priemeru. Na úrovni subtestov WISC-IIISK, bol pre deti s týmito poruchami najmenej náročným subtestom verbálny subtest Podobnosti. Naopak najnáročnejším subtestom sa pre tieto deti ukazoval performačný subtest Kódovanie. V rámci celého výskumného súboru bola potvrdená prítomnosť kognitívneho profilu SCAD, ktorý poukazuje na typické kognitívne deficity spájané s týmito poruchami. Výkon detí so špecifickými poruchami učenia v Bender-Gestalt teste bol zaznamenaný ako výrazne podpriemerný, s najčastejšími problémami vo vzájomnom umiestňovaní jednotlivých častí prekresľovaných figúr. Výsledky práce majú výrazný aplikačný potenciál, pričom okrem vyššie uvedených poznatkov, poukazujú aj na obmedzenia používaných diagnostických nástrojov v praxi.
