Abstract:

Regiony Britské Kolumbie a Kalifornie jsou známé pro své přírodní krásy, národní párky a také své hospodářské bohatství. V první polovině devatenáctého století byla tato území a jejich přírodní zdroje příčinou konfliktů mocností, které kolonizovali Americký kontinent. Nicméně populace původních obyvatel byla početnější než populace nových osadníků a divoká příroda předurčovala charakter těchto regionů. Tato situace se změnila s objevením zlata a následujícími zlatými horečkami, které se v obou regionech odehrály v polovině devatenáctého století. Obě oblasti byly během pár let zaplaveny imigranty. Proces zkrocení divočiny byl v obou oblastech urychlen stavbou transkontinentálních železnic. V druhé polovině devatenáctého století byly utvářeny identity těchto dvou oblastí a jejich obyvatel a velmi důležitým pozadím pro tyto procesy bylo ničení přírody a podmanění si původních obyvatel. Cílem této práce bylo popsat nejvýznamnější problematiku spojenou se zkrocením divočiny v obou těchto oblastech, které jsou si pozoruhodně podobné a byly také vzájemně propojené.

Abstract:

The regions of British Columbia and California are famous for their natural beauties, national parks and also their economic wealth. In the first half of the nineteenth century these territories and their natural resources were a source of disputes of the powers that colonised the American continent. Nevertheless the population of the Natives was higher in numbers than that of the new settlers and the wild nature determined the character of these regions. The situation changed with the discovery of gold and following gold rushes, which occurred in both regions in the middle of the nineteenth century. Both regions were in a few years flooded with immigrants. The process of the taming of the wilderness was in both regions accelerated by the construction of transcontinental railways. During the second half of the nineteenth century the identities of these regions and their inhabitants were formed and a very significant background of these processes was the destruction of nature and the subjugation of the Natives. The goal of this thesis was to describe and compare the most significant issues connected with the taming of the wilderness in both these regions, which bear striking similarities and were also inter-connected.
