The Legacy of Slavery in the Lives of African American Women

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá zkušenostmi otrokyň v dobách otroctví v Americe, přičemž sa berou v úvahu antirasistické i antisexistické diskurzy. Poskytuje důkladný historický přehled, který srovnává životy černých otrokyň a otroků. Dále se práce věnuje vlivu sexismu v 19. století na bílé ženy a černé otrokyně, stejně jako o vlivu genderové nerovnosti otroctví na zotročené černé muže. Následně se diskutuje o odkazu otroctví v životech Afroamerických žen po úpadku samotného otroctví. Nakonec je za pomocí teoretického postoje vysvětleno, proč je nezbytné znát tyto klíčové body minulosti Afroamerických žen. Toto teoretické stanovisko se zabývá "intersectionality", jenž je pak podrobněji popsáno a ukazuje, proč je nutné nevymazat Afroamerické ženy z antirasistické a antisexistické diskurze a změnit způsob, jakým studujeme jejich minulost.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with experiences of black slave women in times of slavery in America whilst taking into consideration both the antiracist and antisexist discourse. It provides a thorough historical overview which puts into comparison the lives of black female slaves and their male counterparts. Moreover, impact of sexism in the 19th of century on both white women and black slave women is discussed as well as the influence of slavery’s gender inequality on enslaved black men. The legacy of slavery in the lives of African American women after slavery is then discussed. At last, an explanation for why is it necessary to know these key points of African American women’s past a theoretical standpoint is elicited. This theoretical standpoint deals with “intersectionality” which is then described in greater detail and shows why is it necessary not to erase African American women from antiracist and antisexist discourse and change the way we study their past.
