The Social Significations of Africanised Pronunciation in metropolitan French: Perceptive Research in Rennes

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the production and the perception of the phonetic feature of affrication produced by francophone speakers living in the French city of Rennes. The first section of the thesis presents the phenomenon on the basis of existing phonological and sociological pieces of research and based on the author’s own acoustic analysis of ten different recordings, analysed in the phonetical program Praat. These recordings serve as a corpus for the second section of the thesis: sociolinguistic field research that aims to examine the perception of this pronunciation feature depending on the language status of the speaker (a "legitimate" or "illegitimate" speaker)

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá realizací a percepcí fonetického jevu zvaného „afrikace“ u frankofonních mluvčí žijících ve francouzském městě Rennes. První část práce představuje fenomén na základě již uskutečněných fonetických a sociologických výzkumů a také na základě vlastní akustické analýzy deseti různých nahrávek provedené ve fonetickém programu Praat. Tyto nahrávky posloužily jako korpus pro druhou část práce - terénní sociolingvistický výzkum, který si kladl za cíl zkoumat percepci této výslovnosti v závislosti na jazykovém statutu mluvčího („locuteur légitime“ x „locuteur illégitime“).
