Tackling homophobia in British education system in comparison with the Czech Republic

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to determine how homophobia is approached in British education, compare the situation with the Czech Republic and demonstrate the importance of the issue to prospective and current teachers from psychological and legal aspects. Although the number of gay students in schools is estimated at 4-10%, still more than half of them meet with the lack of understanding of teachers, exclusion from the collective and physical or verbal attacks from their classmates. Homophobia in both countries is regulated by anti-discrimination laws, which are much more advanced in the UK as they include mandatory proactive promotion of equality in public institutions. The current trend in the fight against homophobia is also the inclusion of alternative family models, discussions, and topics associated with homosexuality in formal and informal curricula of schools. One of the key factors, that support the creation of negative stereotypes, is media. Gays and lesbians are showed mostly as a source of humor and entertainment. The situation in Britain is mapped in more detail. Mainly thanks to Stonewall, an extensive organization that deals with those issues and takes part in the creation of advanced publications. Although Britain is more progressive concerning LGBT rights, anti-discrimination laws and public opinion, homophobia is a much greater problem there.

Cílem této práce je zjistit, jak se k homofobii přistupuje v britském školství, porovnat situaci s Českou republikou a demonstrovat důležitost celé problematiky budoucím a současným učitelům z psychologického a právního hlediska. Přestože je počet homosexuálních studentů ve školách odhadován na 4-10%, stále se více než polovina z nich setkává s nepochopením učitelů, vyloučením z kolektivu a nenávistnými útoky ze strany svých spolužáků, ať už fyzickými či verbálními. Homofobie je v obou zemích regulována antidiskriminačními zákony, které jsou ovšem v Británii mnohem propracovanější a zahrnují také povinné proaktivní prosazování rovnosti ve veřejných institucích. Současným trendem v boji proti homofobii je také začleňování alternativních rodinných modelů, diskusí a témat spojených s homosexualitou do formálního i neformálního kurikula škol. Jedním ze základních faktorů, které podporují tvorbu negativních stereotypů, jsou media. Ta zobrazují gaye a lesby z větší části jakožto zdroj humoru a pobavení. Situace v Británii je mnohem více a detailněji zmapovaná. Velký podíl na tom má Stonewall, rozsáhlá organizace, která se tomuto tématu věnuje a podílí se i na tvorbě moderních publikací. Přestože je na tom v rámci LGBT práv, antidiskriminačních zákonů a veřejného mínění Británie o něco lépe, homofobie je zde také mnohem palčivějším problémem.
