Election analysis: The causes of the fall of the Liberal Party of Canada after elections in 2011

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu Liberální strany v Kanadě a jejího pádu po federálních volbách v roce 2011. Cílem této práce je určit které příčiny vedly k největšímu neúspěchu bývalé nejúspěšnější a dlouhou dobu vládnoucí straně. Práce je rozdělena na tři stěžejní části: první slouží jako přehled kanadského volebního a stranického systému; druhá definuje vývoj Liberální strany z historického hlediska; a třetí analyzuje volby v roce 2011 a pád Liberální strany. Důvody neúspěchu Liberální strany jsou kombinací vnitrostranických problémů; špatné image lídra během předvolební kampaně; flexibilní stranické příslušnosti voličů, která zčásti zapříčinila ztrátu liberální voličské základny; neblahé mínění o výkonu strany v závažných (valenčních) tématech; a neschopnost strany - především jejího předsedy - definovat tradiční liberální hodnoty a politiky.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis dealt with the topic of Liberal Party of Canada and its fall in the 2011 federal elections. The goal of the thesis was to define which causes led to the biggest failure of the former most successful and long-time governing party. Thesis is built up on three main parts: first serves as an overview of the Canadian electoral and party system; second defines the progress of Liberal Party of Canada from a historical view, and the third analyzes 2011 federal election and the Liberal's failure. The reasons for the fall of the Liberal Party is a combination of intraparty problems; poor image of the leader during the election campaign; flexible partisan attachments, which partly caused the loss of liberal voters base; poor judgements about Liberal performance dealing with the valence issues; and the inability of the party, especially its leader, to define traditional liberal attitudes and policies.
