From Manifesto to Mandate: The Effect of Euromanifestos on the Election of Young MEPs

Abstract:

In democratic states, inclusivity and representation of all social groups, including marginalized ones, are vital for effective decision-making. Representative democracy relies on political representation through elections, increasingly highlighting the significance of descriptive representation for minorities and underrepresented groups. Despite socioeconomic progress, age representation in parliaments remains an issue, with the youth being significantly underrepresented. This high underrepresentation is found also in the European Parliament, where the percentage of young representatives does not reflect the youth population within the EU. This thesis examines the role of political party manifestos in influencing the election of young MEPs. By analyzing Euromanifestos, which outline party priorities and values, this thesis explores whether the presence of youth-oriented values in the Euromanifestos correlates with higher youth representation in the EP. This research is grounded in the theories of descriptive representation and value change, particularly the shift towards post-materialist values among younger populations. Empirical analysis is conducted using data from the Euromanifesto project, focusing on regression analyses to test three hypotheses related to the influence of Euromanifestos on youth representation. The study aims to contribute to the broader discourse on democracy, political participation, and societal transformations, offering insights for enhancing youth representation. By identifying factors that positively impact the election of young parliamentarians, the findings may guide political parties, voters,and aspiring young candidates towards fostering a more representative and inclusive political landscape.
