Effect of gastrointestinal helmints infection on host body condition

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá vliv gastrointestinálních helmintů (GIH) třídy Cestoda a kmene Nematoda na kondici hostitele, což je důležité jak u zvířat, tak u lidí. Cílem je vyhodocení jejich vlivu na kondici hostitelů – drobných zemních savců a ověření hypotézy, že mezi jedinci infikovanými a neinfikovanými těmito helminty neexistuje statisticky významný rozdíl v tělesné kondici. Celkem bylo zkoumáno 276 jedinců rodu Apodemus, Microtus a Myodes odchycených v červenci a září roku 2020 na dvou lokalitách v Krušných horách (Sokolovsko a Mostecko). Z celkového počtu bylo 116 jedinců zatíženo GIH. U těchto parazitů nebyl určen druh ani množství, ale pouze to, zda je jedinec infikován či nikoliv. Pomocí reziduálního kondičního indexu byla u všech hostitelů vypočtena kondice. Následovalo prověření normality pomocí Shapiro-Wilkova testu. Dále byl použit jak neparametrický test (Mann-Whitneyův), tak kvůli relativně velkému počtu jedinců pro srovnání i parametrický test (T-test o rovnosti průměrů při shodných rozptylech). Dále byl zkoumán vliv interakce faktorů věk a parazitace GIH na kondici jedince. Nejprve byla prověřována homogenita rozptylu (Levenův test, Cochran C test) a normalita (Shapiro-Wilkův test), na základě poměrně velkého datasetu byl použit test ANOVA s interakcemi. Všechny hodnoty p byly porovnány s hladinou významnosti α = 5 %. V případě vyhodnocení vlivu infekce GIH na kondici hostitele byl výsledek takový, že nulovou hypotézu nelze zamítnout, což prokázaly tyto hodnoty: p(0,273)>α (Mann-Whitneyův test), p(0,404)>α (T-test). I když nebyl vliv statisticky významný, o něco větší průměr reziduí indexu kondice vykazovali parazitovaní jedinci (MeanP = 0,274, MeanN = 0,198). V případě vyhodnocení interakce faktorů věk a parazitace GIH byl výsledek takový, že statisticky významný rozdíl byl pouze u faktoru věk: p(0,005)<α. Průměry reziduí indexu kondice skupin junior a adult nabývaly těchto hodnot: MeanA = 0,479, MeanJ = -0,817. U faktoru parazitace GIH ani v tomtu testu nevyšel vliv statisticky významný: p(0,712)>α, stejně tak u interakce obou námi sledovaných faktorů: p(0,597)>α. Dle výsledků této práce nemá infekce GIH na hostitele vliv, stejně tak nemá vliv ani interakce faktorů věk a parazitace GIH. Co však má statisticky významný vliv na kondici hostitele, je jeho věk. Výsledky ostatních studií se různí, a to od pozitivního vlivu, přes nulový až po negativní. Rozdíly mohou být způsobeny několika faktory, například druhem parazitů nebo parazitární zátěží, na což se ale tato práce nezaměřovala. Tato práce ukázala další pohled na to, jak mohou GIH působit na své hostitele. Jelikož ale nebyl v této práci vzat v úvahu faktor druhu parazitů či jejich intenzita, určitě by bylo vhodné navázat podobným výzkumem, který by tyto faktory zahrnoval.

Abstract:

This work examinates the influence of gastrointestinal helminths (GIH) of the Cestoda class and the Nematoda strain on the condition of the host which is important not only for animals but also for humans. The aim is to evaluate their effect on the condition of hosts – small terrestrial mammals and to verify the hypothesis that there is no statistically significant difference in physical condition between individuals infected and uninfected with these helminths. 276 Apodemus, Microtus and Myodes genus samples captured in July and September 2020 at two sites in the Ore Mountains (Sokolov and Most area) were examinated. 116 samples has been infected with helminths. No species or quantity has been determined for these parasites but only whether the individual is infected or not. The condition of all hosts was calculated using the residual condition index followed by verification of normality using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Furthermore, both the nonparametric test (Mann-Whitney test) and the parametric test (T-test on equality of diameters with identical variances) were used for comparison due to the relatively large number of samples. The influence of the interaction of age factors and GIH parasitism on the sample's condition was also evaluated. The homogeneity of variance (Levene's test, Cochran's C test) and normality (Shapiro–Wilk test) was assessed, ANOVA test with interactions was used based on a relatively large dataset. All p values were compared with a significance level of α = 5 %. The result of examination the effect of GIH infection on the host condition was that the null hypothesis could not be rejected, as demonstrated by the values: p(0,273)>α (Mann-Whitney test), p(0,404)>α (T-test). Although the effect was not statistically significant, slightly larger average of residual condition index were showed by parasitized samples (MeanP = 0,274, MeanN = -0,198). In the case of evaluating the interactions of age and GIH parasitism factors there was a statistically significant difference only in the age factor: p(0,005)<α. Averages of residual condition index of the junior group and adult group were as follows: MeanA = 0,479, MeanJ = 0,817. The GIH parasitic factor was not statistically significant in this test either: p(0,712)>α, as well as in the interaction of both examinated factors: p(0,597)>α. According to the results of this work, GIH infection has no effect on the host, nor does the interaction of age and parasitic GIH factors. However, what has a statistically significant effect on the condition of the host is its age. The results of other studies vary, from positive to null to negative. The differences may be caused by several factors, such as the type of parasites or the parasitic load, which is not examined in my work. This work showed another view at how GIH can affect their hosts. However, since the factors of the type of parasites or their intensity were not taken into account in this work, it would certainly be appropriate to follow up with similar research, which would include these factors.
