The influence of shade on perception of virtual environments.

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o problematice stínu v kartografii. Hlavním cílem práce je ověření vlivu použití stínu na vnímání trojrozměrných kartografických vizualizací. V práci jsou shrnuty základní charakteristiky stínu a popsány možnosti nastavení parametrů stínu ve vybraných softwarech. Součástí práce je praktický experiment, který proběhl metodou počítačové virtuální reality a zúčastnil se ho vzorek 48 participantů. Experiment usiloval o odhalení vhodného nastavení vybraných parametrů tak, aby napomáhaly ke správnému řešení zadaných úloh a zároveň působily realisticky. Výsledky naznačují, že stíny nejsou jasným a vhodným vodítkem pro určování orientace. Dlouhý stín je spolehlivější než krátký stín při určování výškových rozdílů budov. Pro správné rozpoznání barev je vhodné, aby bylo prostředí bez stínu, anebo byla nastavená snížená intenzita světla. Z výsledků je patrné, že absence stínu v prostředí působí nerealisticky, naopak přítomnost stínu bez ohledu na jeho délku a intenzitu světla působí realisticky.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of the shadow in cartography. The main goal of the thesis is to verify the influence of the use of shadow on perception of three-dimensional cartographic visualizations. The thesis summarizes the basic characteristics of shadow and describes the possibilities of setting shadow parameters in selected software. Part of the thesis is a practical experiment, which took place using the method of desktop VR and was attended by a sample of 48 participants. The experiment sought to reveal the appropriate setting of selected parameters so that they help to solve the assigned tasks correctly and at the same time look realistic. The results point out that shadows are not a clear and appropriate cue for determining orientation. A long shadow is more reliable than a short shadow in determining the height differences of buildings. For correct color recognition, it is advisable to have a virtual environment with no shadows or to set a reduced light intensity. The results show the absence of shadow in the virtual environment seems unrealistic, on the contrary, the presence of shadow regardless of its length and light intensity seems realistic.
