The Impact of the War in Ukraine on Remittances from the Czech Republic to Ukraine

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem mé práce je zjistit, jakým způsobem ovlivnil současný válečný konflikt na Ukrajině zasílání remitencí pracovních migrantů v České republice. Dále se v práci zabývám důvody, které vedou Ukrajince k migraci do ČR s ohledem na současnou situaci a potenciálem remitencí na poválečnou obnovu Ukrajiny. Součástí je i teoretická část věnovaná remitencím, motivaci remitence posílat a remitenčním tokům. S remitenčními toky na Ukrajinu souvisí i poplatky za finanční transfery a náklady na transport. Metodologie práce zahrnuje kvantitativní i kvalitativní výzkum. Kvantitativním vyhledáváním a zpracováním dat je podložena teoretická část, praktická část se skládá z pěti hloubkových rozhovorů s ukrajinskými zasílateli remitencí. K teoreticky zpracovaným datům patří statistiky o přílivech pracovních imigrantů, statistiky remitenčních toků a poplatků za transakce. V rámci statistik budou zpracovány i statistiky odlivu osob s vysokým vzděláním z Ukrajiny a na základě toho zanalyzován pojem brain drain. Teoreticky bude rozebrán i ekonomický pojem remitence a faktory přitahující pracovní migraci z Ukrajiny do ČR. Praktickou částí jsou hloubkové rozhovory. Respondenti byli vybíráni náhodně, původně přes neziskové organizace pomáhající imigrantům z Ukrajiny (Člověk v tísni, Multikulturní centrum Praha), ovšem neúspěšně. Respondenti byli poté vybráni přes náhodné známé, s ohledem na to, aby co nejvíce obohatili vzorek, resp. aby pocházeli z různých částí Ukrajiny, pracovali v různých odvětvích, měli různé stupně vzdělání a kvalifikací. Hloubkové rozhovory se skládají ze 4 okruhů otázek: sociodemografické otázky (věk, bydliště, původ); zkušenosti s prací v ČR (důvody příjezdu, kvalifikace, vzdělání, výdělek a spotřeba); Remitence (frekvence zasílání remitencí, formy zasílaných remitencí, způsoby posílání remitencí); Válečný konflikt na Ukrajině (vliv konfliktu na zasílání remitencí, vliv na rodinu a přátele, vyhlídka do budoucnosti, návrat na Ukrajinu).

Abstract:

The main objective of my thesis is to find out how the current war conflict in Ukraine has affected the sending of remittances of migrant workers in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, I deal with the reasons that lead Ukrainians to migrate to the Czech Republic with regard to the current situation and the potential of remittances for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. It also includes a theoretical part devoted to remittances, the motivation to send remittances and remittance flows. Remittance flows to Ukraine are also related to fees for financial transfers and transport costs. The methodology of the work includes both quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative search and data processing is supported by the theoretical part, the practical part consists of five in-depth interviews with Ukrainian remittance forwarders. Theoretically processed data include statistics on labor immigrant inflows, statistics on remittance flows and transaction fees. The statistics will also process statistics on the outflow of people with high education from Ukraine and on the basis of this the concept of brain drain will be analyzed. Theoretically, the economic concept of remittances and the factors attracting labor migration from Ukraine to the Czech Republic will also be discussed. The practical part is in-depth interviews. Respondents were selected randomly, originally through non-profit organizations helping immigrants from Ukraine (People in Need, Multicultural Center Prague), but without success. Respondents were then selected through random acquaintances in order to enrich the sample as much as possible, respectively to come from different parts of Ukraine, worked in different industries, had different levels of education and qualifications. In-depth interviews consist of 4 sets of questions: socio-demographic issues (age, residence, origin); experience with work in the Czech Republic (reasons for arrival, qualifications, education, earnings and consumption); Remittances (frequency of sending remittances, forms of remittances sent, methods of sending remittances); War conflict in Ukraine (influence of the conflict on sending remittances, impact on family and friends, prospects for the future, return to Ukraine).
