The Zeman Café in Brno. The Original Building by Architect Bohuslav Fuchs and its Reconstruction from 1990s

Abstract:

Tématem práce je Zemanova kavárna v Brně, dílo architekta Bohuslava Fuchse, jenž byl jednou z hlavních osobností brněnského funkcionalismu. Právě jeho Zemanova kavárna byla první striktně funkcionalistickou stavbou v Brně a jednou z prvních v celém Československu. Proto se práce v úvodních kapitolách zabývá vývojem architektury na počátku 20. století a seznamuje s hlavními zásadami funkcionalistické architektury, přičemž je také nastíněn vývoj brněnské architektury. Práce se poté věnuje postavení Bohuslava Fuchse v oblasti brněnského funkcionalismu a zmiňuje jeho nejvýznamnější díla. Dále je vykreslena atmosféra Československa v době první republiky, kdy měl společensky velký význam kavárenský život. V souvislosti s tématem práce pojednává především o kavárenství v Brně a naznačuje osudy některých brněnských kaváren z pohledu významných staveb, jejichž prostory byly za socialismu nenávratně změněny a jako kavárny zanikly. Stěžejní část práce je věnována Zemanově kavárně, její původní stavbě od Bohuslava Fuchse a následně její replice. Popisuje okolnosti vzniku a bohužel také zániku původní stavby kavárny, dále se zabývá novou stavbou Zemanovy kavárny z 90. let minulého století a jejím vymezením oproti stavbě původní. Je nastíněn dlouhý proces příprav a problémy při výstavbě repliky. Obě stavby jsou také srovnávány. Poslední kapitola pojednává o problému kopií, replik a rekonstrukcí, přičemž jsou uvedeny také příklady ze současného Brna.

Abstract:

The subject of this work is The Zeman Café in Brno, the significant building of Bohuslav Fuchs, one of the most famous personalities in the Czech architecture. And just his Zeman Café was the first strictly functionalistic building in Brno and also one of such first buildings in the whole Czechoslovakia. That is why the introductory chapters engage in the architectural development of the beginning of the 20th century and get to know the main principles of the functionalistic architecture and also the main events in Brno. Than the work devotes to the position of Bohuslav Fuchs in the Brno architecture and refers about the most remarkable functionalistic works of him. After that the work is about life in the Czechoslovakia in the years of the First Republic. In this way the coffee bars were the most important places where the people meet and spend their free time. This part mainly describes the social life in Brno and also the most important coffee bars as the buildings which had to compromise with the communistic regime. The fundamental part of this work deals with The Zeman Café, the original building by architect Bohuslav Fuchs and its reconstruction. The work describes circumstances of the rise of the original building and also of its extinction. Another part is about new building of this café from 1990s. Both buildings are also confronted. The last chapter attends to the problem of the copies, replicas and the reconstructions and gives examples from the contemporary Brno.
