The phenomenon of the therapeutic diary written during residential addiction treatment: Interpretative phenomenological analysis

Abstract:

The aim of this Master‘s thesis is to explore the experiences of patients in residential addiction treatment with the phenomenon of therapeutic diary. The research regarding addiction and its treatment is extensive, but the current theoretical background for therapeutic diaries written during residential treatment is insufficient despite the great potential they hold. In the empirical part of this thesis, three interviews with patients currently in residential treatment were carried out regarding their experiences with therapeutic diaries they were writing at the time. The interviews were subsequently analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Using descriptive techniques combined with interpretative ones, a meticulous presentation of individual cases was created. The specific parts of the experiences that all participants had in common were also identified. These aspects were then described highlighting similarities and differences in the way they are perceived by the participants. Some of these common aspects are for example writing process, patient’s connection to the diary, writing about emotions, communication and relationship with the therapist, other patients, family, instructions for writing the diary and lastly their diary in the future. The results are followed by the discussion, in which they are put into context with the current theoretical background. In the last part of this thesis, its limitations and possible directions for future research are introduced.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto magisterskej diplomovej práce bolo preskúmať skúsenosť pacientov v strednodobej ústavnej liečbe s fenoménom terapeutického denníku. Výskum ohľadom závislostí a ich liečby je pomerne rozsiahly, ale fenomén terapeutického denníku písaného v priebehu liečby je preskúmaný pomerne málo, napriek jeho veľkého potenciálu využitia. V tejto práci boli realizované tri rozhovory s pacientmi prechádzajúcimi ústavnou liečbou, ktoré sa týkali ich skúsenosti s terapeutickými denníkmi počas liečby. Rozhovory boli následne analyzované použitím interpretatívnej fenomenologickej analýzy a z každého individuálneho prípadu bola vytvorená podrobná prezentácia výsledkov s použitím deskripcie aj interpretácie. Taktiež boli identifikované aspekty ich skúsenosti, ktoré majú všetci participanti spoločné a boli popísané podobnosti a rozdiely v ich vnímaní. Medzi tieto spoločné aspekty ovplyvňujúce ich skúsenosť s terapeutickým denníkom patrí napríklad proces písania, písanie o pocitoch a vzťah ku denníku, komunikácia a vzťah s terapeutkou, iní pacienti a rodina a v neposlednom rade oznam o písaní a ich denník v budúcnosti. Výsledky sú doplnené diskusiou, v rámci ktorej sú dané do súvislosti s aktuálnymi teoretickými poznatkami a taktiež sú reflektované limity tejto práce, či potenciálne návrhy na ďalší výskum v tejto oblasti.
