Loanwords and code-switching used by Latin American immigrants in Texas. A sociolinguistic perspective

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with loanwords and code-switching in the context of languages in contact between Spanish and English language in the USA. The teoretical part of the paper is initially devoted to the sociolinguistics and subsequently focuses in detail on the afore mentioned linguistic phenomena, which are often used by Latin American immigrants in Texas. In the practical part, the paper analyzes the corpus of video recordings in the ‘Spanish in Texas’ project. First, it deals with the loanwords and code-switching which are sorted and evaluated. Subsequently, the paper uses all criteria the project offers and creates a sociolinguistic perspective.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá výpůjčkami a změnami kódů v kontextu jazyků v kontaktu mezi španělštinou a angličtinou na území USA. Teoretická část práce je nejprve věnována sociolingvistice a poté se detailně zaměřuje na již zmíněné lingvistické fenomény, které často používají hispanoameričtí imigranti v Texasu. V praktické části tato práce analyzuje korpus videonahrávek projektu "Spanish in Texas". Nejprve se zabývá výpůjčkami a změnami kódů, které třídí a vyhodnocuje. Poté využívá všechna možná kritéria, která projekt nabízí a vytváří z nich sociolingvistickou interpretaci.
