Succession of Auchenorrhyncha (Hemiptera) assemblages in abandoned military training areas

Abstract:

Military training grounds represent areas with high biodiversity in today's cultural landscape. Repeated intense but small-scale disturbances of vegetation and soil by military troops have unintentionally created a mosaic of various successional stages, including rare pioneer plant and animal communities. This thesis compares the assemblages of true hoppers (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha), one of the dominant groups of phytophagous insects in Central European grasslands, along a successional gradient at two abandoned military training grounds in the Czech Republic. Both sites are located in the thermophytic zone of southern Moravia on acidic but geologically different substrates. Early successional habitats have been restored at both sites in recent years. True hoppers were collected by suction sampling from four different successional stages of vegetation: 1) sparse vegetation with a significant pro-portion of bare substrate; 2) dense short dry grassland; 3) dense tall ruderal grassland; 4) groves. A total of 9,973 individuals and 151 true hopper species were recorded. The highest abundance and species richness of true hoppers were found in tall ruderal grassland, while their lowest values were recorded in sparse vegetation, where, conversely, the highest species richness of vascular plants was observed. The species composition of true hopper assemblages significantly differed between the successional stages of vegetation. For each stage, 3 to 15 indicator species were identified, favoring a single habitat type. The assemblages in sparse vegetation and short dry grassland were characterized by a higher representation of specialized (monophagous, brachypterous, univoltine) species and a smaller average body size compared to tall ruderal grassland and groves. The most threatened species were recorded in short dry grassland and tall ruderal grassland. To maintain high biodiversity of true hoppers in both abandoned military areas in the future, it is necessary to maintain the existing mosaic of various successional stages. This can be achieved through simulations of military exercises and other interventions (clearing shrubs, topsoil removal, grazing, etc.) creating early successional stages.

Abstract:

Vojenské cvičiská v dnešnej kultúrnej krajine predstavujú oblasti s vysokou biodiverzitou. Často opakované, intenzívne a pritom maloplošné narušenie vegetácie a pôdy vojenským výcvikom v nich neúmyselne vytvorilo mozaiku rôznych sukcesných štádií vrátane vzácnych pionierskych spoločenstiev rastlín a živočíchov. Táto diplomová práca porovnáva spoločenstvá cikád (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha), jednej z dominantných skupín fytofágneho hmyzu v stredoeurópskych trávnatých po-rastoch, pozdĺž sukcesívneho gradientu na dvoch opustených vojenských cvičiskách v Českej republike, Načeratickom kopci u Znojma a Pánove u Hodonína. Lokality ležia v termofytiku južnej Moravy na kyslých, ale geologicky odlišných podložiach a v predchádzajúcich rokoch na nich prebehla ekologická obnova raných sukcesných biotopov. Odber vzoriek cikád bol vykonaný záhradným vysávačom zo štyroch rôznych sukcesných štádií vegetácie: 1) riedkej vegetácie s podstatným zastúpením holého substrátu; 2) zapojených krátkostéblových trávnikov; 3) zapojených vysokostéblových (ruderálnych) trávnikov; 4) podrastu lesíkov. Celkovo bolo zaznamenaných 9973 jedincov a 151 druhov cikád. Najvyššia hojnosť a druhová bohatosť cikád bola zistená v ruderálnych trávnikoch, zatiaľ čo najnižšia bola v riedkej vegetácii, kde sa naopak pozorovala najvyššia druhová bohatosť cievnatých rastlín. Druhové zloženie spoločenstiev cikád sa medzi jednotlivými sukcesívnymi štádiami vegetácie významne líšilo. Pre každé štádium bolo zistených 3 až 15 indikátorových druhov preferujúcich jediný typ habitatu. Spoločenstvá cikád v riedkej vegetácii a zapojených krátkostéblových trávnikoch sa vyznačovali vyšším zastúpením špecializovaných (monofágnych, brachyptérnych, univoltínných) druhov a nižšou priemernou veľkosťou tela v porovnaní s vysokými ruderálnými trávnikmi a podrastom lesíkov. Najviac ohrozených druhov bolo zaznamenaných v krátkostéblových trávnikoch a vysokých ruderálnych trávnikoch. Pre udržanie vysokej biodiverzity cikád v oboch sledovaných opustených vojenských priestoroch do budúcnosti je potrebné udržiavať súčasnú mozaiku rôznych sukcesných štádií, ktorá môže byť dosiahnutá simuláciou vojenských cvičení a ďalšími zásahmi (vytláčanie drevín, kosenie, pastva atď.), vytvárajúcimi rané sukcesné štádia.
