Legitimation Crisis of the Contemporary Catholic Church from the Perspective of Deník Referendum: a thematic analysis

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je krize legitimizace současné katolické církve v České republice z pohledu Deníku Referendum. Teoretickým rámcem práce je sekularizační teze Petera L. Bergera a Thomase Luckmanna, která pojednává o úpadku vlivu náboženství v moderních společnostech. Teoretická část práce shrnuje poznatky o historickém vývoji katolické církve, rozsahu jejího majetku a postoji české společnosti k dané instituci. Dále objasňuje koncepty legitimizace a sekularizace. Představuje také fungování zvoleného média a jeho postoj k náboženství. V empirické části na základě tematické analýzy publicistických článků pocházejících z vybraného média charakterizuje katolickou církev a způsob, jak ji vnímá redakce konkrétního deníku. Výsledky analýzy poukazují z pohledu deníku na nedostačující legitimitu katolické církve v současné české společnosti. Tímto způsobem je podle média také zpochybněna legitimita jejích majetkových nároků vůči státu.

Abstract:

The theme of bachelor thesis is legitimation crisis of the contemporary Catholic church from the perspective of Deník Referendum. Theoretical framework of the thesis is the secularization thesis by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann, which discusses decline of influence of religion in modern societies. The theoretical part summarizes knowledge about historical development of catholic church, extent of its property and attitude of Czech society to the institution. It further clarifies the concepts of legitimation and secularization. In the empirical part based on a thematic analysis of journalistic articles originating from a selected media it characterizes the Catholic church and how it is perceived by editors of a particular journal. From point of the journal the research results indicate weak legitimacy of Catholic Church in contemporary Czech society. In this way, according to the media, legitimacy of its property claims against state is also questioned.
