The ‘Intelligent Woman’ in John Fowles

Abstract:

Mnoho děl Johna Fowlese může být (a bývá) chápáno jako kritika mužských hrdinů a maskulinních hodnot. Má diplomová práce se zaměří na ženské postavy ve Fowlesově literatuře, které jsou prostředkem k této kritice: tyto postavy reprezentují možnosti vývoje (emočního, morálního, osobního) v porovnání s postavami mužskými. Je třeba také poznamenat, že přestože ženy v dílech bojují za svobodu, nikdy ji plně nedostanou, protože jsou viděny z mužské perspektivy. Toto svědčí o zapeklitosti otázky Fowlesova „feminismu“, jelikož se zdá, že podporuje ženský náhled pouze v případě, že slouží k výchově a osvětě mužů. Jinými slovy, Fowlesova kritika maskulinity je podporována řadou esencialistických předpokladů o ženách a feminitě. Tento rozpor značně upoutal pozornost kritiků a bude analyzován v této práci se zaměřením na hlavní ženské postavy v dílech Francouzova milenka (1969), Mág (1966) a Sběratel (1963). Ve své práci se budu věnovat třem hlavním oblastem: za prvé, pozice ženy jako nástroje v těchto dílech. Za druhé, Fowlesova kritika mužských hrdinů a přemítání nad jeho vlastní rolí jako spisovatele – muže. Za třetí, kontroverze a rozvolněnost výkladů těchto děl a způsob, jakým Fowles strukturuje komunikaci mezi ním, jeho příběhem a čtenářem.

Abstract:

Much of John Fowles’ fiction can be (and has been) read as a critique of its male protagonists and masculinist values. My dissertation will consider the female figures in Fowles’ fictions that are instrumental in this critique: these figures represent possibilities for (emotional, moral, personal) evolution in comparison to the male protagonists. It also should be said that even if female characters fight for liberation, they are not fully getting it because seen through the male perspective in the novels. As this last may suggest, the question of Fowles’ “feminism” is vexed as he appears to endorse a view of woman ultimately in the service of educating and improving the male member of the species. In other words, Fowles’ critique of the masculine finds support in a number of essentialist assumptions about women and the feminine. This tension has received significant critical attention, and it will be discussed in this paper with the focus on the principal female characters of The French Lieutenant Woman (1969), The Magus (1966) and The Collector (1963). There will be three main points in my paper that I will address: first, the instrumental role of the women in the novels. Second, the Fowles criticism of the male protagonists and his own reflection on his role as a male novelist. Third, the controversy and the freedom of the interpretation of all the three novels and how Fowles is structuring the communication between him, his narration and the readers.
