Waveform mouldings. Dating and restoration collection items from wood

Abstract:

Vlnitá lišta je raně barokní technika obrábění dřeva do tehdy oblíbeného chvějivě vlnitého tvaru. Technika se vyvinula v 17. století v Jihoněmecké oblasti Augsburgu a následně rozšířila do celé Evropy. Časté uplatnění našla na mobiliáři ze dřeva, oltářní architektuře i obrazových rámech. Detailní znalost technologie rozšiřuje možnosti sbírkotvorné činnosti muzeí a restaurování předmětů s výskytem techniky. Cílem této práce je přenesení komplexních poznatků známých mezi zahraniční odbornou veřejností do českého prostředí formou kompilace dostupných cizojazyčných materiálů a rozšíření praktického použití. Výzkumy a praktické ověřování probíhají v rámci jednotlivých studií od poloviny dvacátého století dodnes v Evropě a USA. Práce se zabývá popisem známých typů lišt, přibližuje historii i varianty zařízení na kterých byly lišty vyráběny podle záznamů a nákresů ze sedmnáctého až počátku dvacátého století z Německa, Anglie, Francie a dalších zemí. V praktické části je navíc zařazen soupis analytických metod relevantních pro datování, ověřování autenticity i možností výroby identických kopií jako doplňků restaurovaných předmětů. Práce je obohacena praktickým ověřením možností technologie na několika druzích lišt, vyráběných na stejném zařízení s přidanými modifikacemi chodu. Poslední částí je dokumentace rekonstrukce technologie dosud nepopsaného typu dvojitě vlnité lišty, jejíž originál se nachází ve sbírkách Státního hradu Pernšejn.

Abstract:

The waveform mouldings is an early baroque woodworking technique for the then popular shimmering shape. The technology developed in the 17th century in the South German region of Augsburg and subsequently spread throughout Europe. This technique found frequent use on furniture made of wood, altar architecture and picture frames. Detailed knowledge of technology extends the possibilities of collecting activities of museums and restoration of objects with occurrence of the technology. The aim of this work is the transfer of complex knowledge known among foreign professional public into the Czech environment through the compilation of available foreign materials and the extension of practical use. Studies and practical verifications have been conducted in individual studies since the mid-twentieth century to this day in Europe and the USA. The work deals with the description of known types of mouldings, describes the history and variants of devices on which the mouldings were manufactured according to records and drawings from the seventeenth to the beginning of the twentieth century from Germany, England, France and other countries. Moreover, the practical part includes an inventory of analytical methods relevant to dating, authenticity verification and the possibility of producing identical copies as additions to restored items. The work is enriched by practical verification of technology options on several types of mouldings, produced on the same device with added modifications of operation. The last part is the documentation of the reconstruction of the technology of the so far undescribed type of double-wave moulding, the original of which is in the collections of the State Castle Pernštejn.
