Error Analysis: Comparison of B1 and B2 Czech EFL Learners

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zameriava na chybovú analýzu písaného korpusu zostaveného z textov českých študentov angličtiny. Dáta, ktoré táto práca analyzuje, sú emaily v rozsahu 200-250 slov, ktoré boli zozbierané od 15-tich študentov na úrovni B1 a od 19-tich študentov na úrovni B2. Emaily boli prepísané, opravené, a označené príslušnými tagmi podľa Louvainskej chybovej taxonómie. Chyby boli rozdelené na 6 domén a 25 kategórií. Tieto boli analyzované najskôr v rámci svojej skupiny, a neskôr porovnané medzi sebou. Analýza ukázala, že chyby v doménach sa s rastúcou úrovňou jazyka významne nemenia.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on developmental errors of Czech learners of EFL. Data consisting of informal emails with the length of 200-250 words were collected from 15 students at B1 level, and 19 students at B2 level of proficiency. The emails were transcribed, corrected, and error tagged by using the Louvain error taxonomy. The errors were divided into 6 domains and 25 categories, which were first analyzed within one proficiency group, and the findings were then compared. The computer-aided error analysis showed that the error domains did not change significantly with a rising proficiency level.
