The Way the Angels Sigh: Musical and Text Analyses of David Stypka's Songs

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je zmapovat tvorbu předčasně zesnulého umělce Davida Stypky (1979-2021), která svým rozsahem sice není velká, ale zanechala nepopiratelné místo na české hudební scéně. Autor spolupracující s kapelou Bandjeez zkomponoval tři alba (Čaruj - 2014, Neboj - 2017, Dýchej - 2021), jež budou podrobena textové a hudební analýze. Rozbory mají za úkol zjistit, jakým způsobem se během let vyvíjela autorova tvorba a vytvořit o ní komplexní obraz. Práce je rozdělena na čtyři části. První část podává informace o autorově životě a důležitých milnících jeho tvorby. V druhé, teoretické části jsou představeny pilíře kvantitativnělingvistické, versologické a muzikologické analýzy. Třetí, praktická část analyzuje texty z výše zmíněných alb prostřednictvím stylometrického, versologického a muzikologického rozboru s využitím následujících metod: aktivity (Q), indexu klouzavého průměru lexikální diverzity (MAMR), průměrné délky tokenu (ATL), vzdálenosti sloves (VD), klouzavého průměru morfologického bohatství (MATTR), detekce klíčových gramatických a sémantických prvků, analýzy rýmů a eufonie (E). Muzikologická analýza sleduje především melodiku, harmonii a motivickou práci. Výsledky výzkumu budou rovněž implementovány do didaktické praxe českého jazyka a hudební výchovy (např. formou pracovního listu, poslechového cvičení či kvízů), přičemž opomenut nebude ani současný důraz na osvojování digitálních kompetencí (žáci budou pracovat s počítačovými programy). Nosnou myšlenkou práce je tedy interdisciplinární propojení jazykovědného, didaktického a muzikologického přístupu.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to map the work of the prematurely deceased artist David Stypka (1979-2021), which has left an undeniable mark on the Czech music scene despite being rather inextensive. The author collaborating with the band Bandjeez composed three albums (Čaruj - 2014, Neboj - 2017, Dýchej - 2021) which will be subjected to textual and musical analysis. These analyses aim to determine the course of evolution of the artist's work over the years and to create its comprehensive picture. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first provides information about the artist's life and important milestones in his work. In the second, theoretical part, the pillars of quantitative linguistic, versological and musicological analysis are introduced. The third, practically oriented part, analyzes the lyrics from the previously mentioned albums through stylometric, versological and musicological analysis using the following methods: activity (Q), moving-average lexical diversity index (MAMR), average token length (ATL), verb distance (VD), Moving-Average Type-Token Ratio (MATTR), detection of key grammatical and semantic elements, analysis of rhymes and euphony (E). Musicological analysis focuses primarily on melodics, harmony and motivic work. The results of the research will also be implemented into the didactic practise of the Czech language and music education (e.g., in the form of worksheets, listening exercises or quizzes) without omitting the current emphasis on acquiring digital competencies (students will work with computer programs). Thus, the key idea of the thesis is the interdisciplinary connection of the linguistic, didactic and musicological approach.
