Occurrence and causes of parthenogenesis in the order Coleoptera

Abstract:

Partenogeneze v řádu brouci (Coleoptera) není příliš častá, nicméně ji můžeme najít napříč různými čeleděmi. V některých případech se můžeme bavit i o geografické partenogenezi. Je možné, že u bryofágního brouka druhu Cytilus sericeus Foster, 1771 se tento typ partenogeneze vyskytuje, ale mnoho informací se neví. Naším cílem bylo zpracovat literární přehled partenogenetických druhů brouků a zjistit, jak populace, především sexuální populace, C. sericeus souvisí s nadmořskou výškou a jestli v jejich výskytu nehraje významnou roli nějaká z environmentálních podmínek prostředí. Metoda teoretické části spočívala v průzkumu dostupné literatury související s partenogenezí u brouků. U praktické části této práce jsme zvolili sběr a dochov jedinců druhu C. sericeus, jejich následnou pitvu za účelem určení pohlaví, extrahování informací z knihy Brouci čeledi plavčíkovití (Haliplidae) a vyklenulcovití (Byrrhidae) střední Evropy (Boukal 2017), stáhnutí informací o prostředí z databáze Chelsa a použití logistické regrese. Zjistili jsme, že v podřádech Archostemata, Adephaga a Polyphaga se partenogeneze objevuje, ale v infrařádu Elateriformia spadajícího pod Polyphaga kromě čeledi Byrrhidae dosud žádná jiná čeleď s výskytem partenogeneze nebyla potvrzena. Samci C. sericeus se vyskytují ve vyšší nadmořské výšce a jako hlavní možnou příčinu jsme zjistili izotermalitu. Je pravděpodobné, že druhy s geografickou partenogenezí mají rozšířenější výskyt než sexuální populace a vyskytují se například ve vyšší nadmořské výšce, na ostrovech či narušených prostředích. Druh C. sericeus vykazuje opačný trend, a to že sexuální populace se nacházejí ve vyšší nadmořské výšce. Vzájemné vztahy mezi nadmořskou výškou, izotermalitou a výskytem samců jsou tématem pro další studium tohoto druhu.

Abstract:

Parthenogenesis in the order of beetles (Coleoptera) is uncommon, however, it can be found across different families. In some cases, we can also talk about geographical parthenogenesis. It is possible that this type of parthenogenesis occurs in the bryophagous beetle Cytilus sericeus Foster, 1771, but there is not known much information. Our goal was to compile a literature review of parthenogenetic species of beetles and to find out how the populations, especially the sexual populations, of C. sericeus are related to the altitude and whether any of the environmental conditions play a significant role in their occurrence. The method of the theoretical part consisted in a survey of the available literature related to parthenogenesis in the order of beetles. For the practical part of this work, we chose the collection and preservation of individuals of the species C. sericeus, their dissection, extracting information from the book Brouci čeledi plavčíkovití (Haliplidae) a vyklenulcovití (Byrrhidae) střední Evropy (Boukal 2017), downloading information about the environment from the Chelsa database and using logistic regression. We found that parthenogenesis occurs in the suborders Archostemata, Adephaga, and Polyphaga, but in the infraorder Elateriformia belonging to Polyphaga, apart from Byrrhidae, no other family with parthenogenesis has been confirmed so far. Males of C. sericeus are found at higher altitudes and we identified isothermality as the main possible cause. It is likely that species with geographic parthenogenesis are more widespread than sexual populations and occur, for example, at higher altitudes, on islands, or in disturbed environments. The species C. sericeus shows the opposite trend and that is sexual populations are found at higher altitudes. The interrelationships between altitude, isothermality, and male abundance are a topic for further study in this species.
