Narrative complexity and transmedial extension of a TV series: a case study of Battlestar Galactica

Anotace:

Studie definuje pojem narativně komplexního seriálu, ukotvuje jej ve vztahu k produkčním změnám v televizních společnostech, nástupu konvergenčních praktik a též ve vztahu k novému typu diváctví (produserství). Posléze je teoretická část reflektována v praktické části – čili v narativní analýze seriálu Battlestar Galactica a rozboru dalších transmediálních extenzí této franšízy. Teoretické kapitoly popisují narativně komplexní seriál jako nový typ seriálového vyprávění doplňující epizodickou, sériovou a kumulativní naraci. Narativně komplexní seriál, tendence objevující se od poloviny 90. let 20. století, využívá hyperdiegeze – nevychází tedy z příběhu či ansáblu postav, ale z vytvořeného fikčního světa, který posléze v mnoha dějových liniích a komplikovanou formou vyprávění postavami zabydluje a buduje mnohé příběhové linky. Práce se také věnuje kontextu, v němž tento nový model vznikl – mediálnímu průmyslu (vzrůstající obliba a návyk diváka na reality TV, delší stopáže seriálů oproti filmovým dílům, rostoucí počet televizních kanálů), technologiím (DVD, rozšíření internetu a nových médií) i změnám v chování publika (produserství, aktivní vyhledávání obsahu i jeho vlastní tvorba). Dále je teoreticky popsán fenomén transmediálního vyprávění, jehož možnosti byly posíleny právě zhruba v polovině 90. let minulého století nástupem nových médií a pro který je narativně komplexní seriál výsostně vhodným modem vyprávění. Publiku je tak umožněno sledovat obsah v novém protokolu, který mu dovoluje interpretovat a rozšiřovat daný televizní obsah ve vztahu k textuálním materiálům nalezeným jinde (na internetu a dalších médiích). Dochází k přechodu od „flow“ k „hyperflow“. Bohatší verzi narativu franšízy pak nevytváří jen samotná oficiální produkce, ale i divák, který na základě daného díla a jeho obsahu produkuje obsahy nové. Takového diváka lze definovat pojmem produser. Díky změně v mediálních technologiích tak výrazně zeslábla dominance dosud tradičního řetězce producent – vydavatel – distributor, tvůrcem obsahu může být v podstatě každý. Cílem případové studie bylo posléze kriticky ukázat, nakolik seriál Battlestar Galactica naplňuje definici narativně komplexního seriálu a jak je v tomto případě naplněn koncept transmediálního vyprávění, jak jej definuje především Henry Jenkins. Práce nejprve nabízí narativní analýzu seriálu. Jeho dominantou je mnohost a rozvětvenost dějových linií, které seriál výrazně odlišně „dávkuje“. Posléze je pozornost věnována rozboru dalších transmediálních extenzí, kdy studie nabízí analýzu konkrétní mediální praxe. Transmediální satelity franšízy BSG slouží v tomto případě nejen k extenzi narace, ale i k propagačním účelům a mají též funkci udržování kontaktu s divákem.

Abstract:

The thesis “Narrative complexity and transmedial extensions of a TV series: a case study of Battlestar Galactica” aims to describe a new trend in the audiovisual culture, emerging since the mid 1990s. The thesis is based mostly on a textual analysis. A TV series with complex narrative is taking advantage of a “hyperdiegesis”, which means that it is not based primarily on a straight storyline or an ensemble of characters but on a complex “fictional universe”, or larger-than-usual fabula,spreading even across millenias or gallaxies. This universe is being built-up by several (seemingly) loosely dependent narratives. Works of this kind usually can not be filled into a single genre; they offer intense genre diversity. Compared to traditional TV series,they also bear more characters, more complicated narrative and syuzhet chronology. The thesis also aims to describe a context that has given birth to this new model of narration. This “zeitgeist” bears three sources of influence. First, the contemporary media industry, characterized by the popularity of “reality shows”,longer TV series and growing number of TV stations. Second, the latest technologies, such are DVDs, internet and other “new media”. Third, the contemporary milieu also encompasses various shifts in spectators’ behavior, such is their active search for information or the rise of the “produser”. The trend of transmedia storytelling gets covered too, as it was reinforced in the 1990s by the arrival of the new media and as it works as an excellent narrative vehicle for the TV series with complex narratives. The spectators are thus able to follow the show in various media, which allows them to augment their understanding of the TV show content in a relation to other texts, for example webisodes and wikis found online. The “flow” is being replaced by a “hyperflow”; a model of one broadcasting medium is to be substituted by a complex system of several media streaming various content. Not only the franchise’s official producers are in command of creating the content related to the fictional world. Many spectators generate their own “texts”, based on the original work and its fictional world. These spectators can be called “produsers”. The recent technological developements have weakened the importancy of the traditional chain “producer - publisher - distributor”. In the personal computing era, almost anyone can create and distribute content. These effect are to some degree reciprocal: producers are often familiar with the content created by produsers. As the thesis argues, this shift is related not only to the content and the narration but also to the marketing strategies, which are often influenced by produsers. These theoretical chapters are then reflected in the practical part, i.e. the narrational analysis of the 2000s TV series Battlestar Galactica. This case study aims to critically explore to what degree this audiovisual work, clearly bearing a complex narrative, uses the concept of transmedia storytelling. The analysis is divided into two parts. The first one describes the narrative system of the actual TV series, dominated by a vast number of diverse story lines. The second part focuses on the franchise’s “satellites” in various media, created both by the official producers and the amateur produsers. The result of the analysis is that is is not possible to call Battlestar Galactica a “pure example of the transmedial storytelling”, because it does not fulfil the Henry Jenkins’ definition. The actual TV episodes are meant to be the “canonical text”, contrary to the series’ satellites, such are webisodes, websites or comic books; even though some of them can be consumed and understood without having watched the TV series. However, Battlestar Galactica’s satellites do not work only as a plain extension of the original narrative. As the sixth chapter explains, they serve as a part of a marketing strate

gy. They were also created in order to don’t let the fans forget about the series during the months that it is not aired. Websites, videos, wikis or game mods created by “produsers” do also possess a marketing effect. The shift to the transmedia storytelling is thus motivated also by economical interests. The spectator of a transmedial franchise like this is, as the thesis closes, allowed to participate on the building of the fictional world outside of the “one way flow” concept. In this case, television is not a traditional one way flow channel anymore, working in the passive mode of “appointment media”. It rather invites the spectator to an active participation, thus the television becomes an “engagement medium”. The contemporary “network culture” also gives both the specator and the produser much more freedom in consuming and interpreting the content and creating own hypotheses. Although Battlestar Galactica franchise could not be called a pure example of the transmedial storytelling, via its detailed analysis the thesis shows how the theoretical concepts described in the previous paragraphs work in the real world of contemporary audiovisual culture.
