Foreign Policy of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je jednopřípadovou kvalitativní studií, která pojednává o problematice severokorejské zahraniční politiky od konce Druhé světové války až po současnost. Cílem práce je zhodnotit priority a aspekty současné zahraniční politiky a diplomacie KLDR s ohledem na historii, unifikaci Korejského poloostrova a vnitřní politiku. Teoretická část se věnuje vymezení pojmu zahraniční politika, teoretickým rámcům pro její výzkum, uchopení dalších klíčových pojmů a metodologickému postupu. První empirická kapitola poskytuje náhled na klíčové historické události Severní Korey, především pak postupnou proměnu struktury klíčových partnerů. Třetí kapitola hodnotí hlavní vektory severokorejské diplomacie a zahraniční politiky za vlády Kim Čong-una. Čtvrtá kapitola komplexně posuzuje výsledky aktivit Severní Koreje v Africe a na Blízkém východě či v Latinské Americe. Práce je vypracována na základě kompilace odborné literatury, přičemž zároveň pracuje s teorií neoklasického realismu. Práce ve výsledku poukazuje na fakt, že jednání KLDR v oblasti zahraniční politiky je zcela podřízeno snaze udržet režim životaschopným.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is a single-case qualitative study, which deals with the issue of North Korean foreign policy from the end of World War II to the present days. The purpose of the thesis is to evaluate priorities and aspects of the current North Korean foreign policy and diplomacy, while also considering the history, the unification of the Korean peninsula and domestic policy. The theoretical part is devoted to the definition of the term foreign policy, the theoretical framework for its research, grasping other key terms and the methodological procedure. The first empirical chapter provides an insight into the key historical events of North Korea, especially the gradual transformation of the structure of its key partners. The third chapter evaluates the main vectors of North Korean diplomacy and foreign policy under the rule of Kim Jong-un. The fourth chapter comprehensively assesses the results of the DPRK's activities in Africa, the Middle East, or Latin America. The development of the thesis is based on a compilation of academic literature, while at the same time working with the theory of neoclassical realism. As a result, the work points out that the actions of the DPRK in the field of foreign policy are completely subordinated to the effort of keeping the regime viable.
