Spontaneous symmetry breaking and the non-relativistic Goldstone theorem

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se věnujeme převážně spontánnímu narušení kontinuálních symetrií a Nambu-Goldstoneově teorému bez Lorentzovy invariance. Symetrie v kontextu klasické Lagrangeovské teorie pole vedou na odvození prvního teorému Noetherové, modifikovaného pro jednu fixní oblast časoprostoru. Teorém Noetherové je úzce spjatý s problematikou nerelativistického Nambu-Goldstoneova theorému, a proto mu dedikujeme samostatnou kapitolu. Metodou efektivní Lagrangeovské hustoty analyzujeme nerelativistické uspořádání Nambu-Goldstoneova teorému. Tento přístup vede k dělení N-G bosonů na dva odlišné typy A, B dle disperzní relace, kterou splňují. Ukazuje se, že spontánní narušení generátorů symetrie vykazuje v nerelativistických systémech rozdílný poměr narušených generátorů a N-G bosonů oproti Lorentzovsky invariantním systémům. Tento poměr již není jedna ku jedné.

Abstract:

In this thesis we mainly study the spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries and the Nambu-Goldstone theorem without Lorentz invariance. Symmetries in the context of classical Lagrangian field theory lead us to the derivation of Noether's first theorem modified in the context of one fixed spacetime region. We dedicate a separate chapter to Noether's theorem since it is closely related to the general issues of non-relativistic Nambu-Goldstone theorem. Using the method of an effective Lagrangian density we investigate the non-relativistic setting of Nambu-Goldstone theorem. This approach leads us to two types of N-G bosons A, B which differ by the dispersion relation they satisfy. It turns out that for the spontaneous breakdown of symmetry generators in non-relativistic systems the correspondence between the number of broken generators and the number of N-G bosons differs from the one which applies to Lorentz-invariant systems. This ratio is no longer the one-to-one relation.
