Abstract:

Hlavním záměrem této diplomové práce je prozkoumat specifika života indické menšiny v Británii a vztahy mezi indickými imigranty a většinovou společností a jejich vývoj v období od konce druhé světové války. V tomto období zaznamenala britská společnost výrazné změny vyplývající z rozpadu britského koloniálního impéria. V důsledku následného přílivu imigrantů z celého světa se britská společnost změnila z převážně bílé komunity vycházející z křesťanské tradice v multikulturní společnost. Problémy indické minority i Británii vyplývaly z výrazných kulturních rozdílů mezi oběma skupinami a byly také ovlivněny vztahy mezi Indy a Brity vytvořenými během koloniální nadvlády. Diplomová práce se skládá ze tří kapitol. První kapitola se zaměřuje na historické souvislosti, které předurčily vztahy mezi Brity a Indy se zřetelem k roli Východoindické společnosti, indickému hnutí za nezávislost po roce 1857 a vlivu obou světových válek. Druhá kapitola se zabývá vývojem britské imigrační politiky a integračních strategií, které byly odrazem veřejného mínění o imigrantech a které vytvářely rámec, který zásadně ovlivňoval život Indů v Británii. Třetí kapitola se zaměřuje na indickou menšinu v Británii, na důvody migrace Indů do Británie, na problémy, kterým čelili v různých obdobích a na změny jejich sociálně ekonomického profilu.

Abstract:

The main objective of this diploma thesis is to examine specifics of Indian minority's life in Britain and to evaluate the development of the relations between Indian immigrants and the majority society in the period since the end of the World War II. This period was characterised by significant changes in British society resulting from the breakdown of the British colonial empire. Due to subsequent influx of immigrants from all over the world the British society changed from predominantly white community based on Christian values to multicultural one. The problems of Indian minority in Britain resulted from considerable cultural differences between both groups. They were also influenced by relationships between the British and Indians, which were formed during the colonial rule. The thesis consists of three chapters. In the first one I concentrate on historical context which determined relationships between the British and Indians with the focus on the role of East India Company, the Indian independence movements since 1857 and the impacts of both world wars. Second chapter deals with the development of British immigration policy and integration strategies which reflected the public attitude towards immigrants and which formed the framework that determined lives of Indians in Britain. The third chapter is focussed on the Indian minority in Britain, the reasons for Indians' migration to Britain, the problems they faced in different periods and the changes in their socio-economic profile.
