Basic ideas, organizing structure and environmental dimension of bicycle movement in Great Britain and Czech republic

Abstract:

Práce se pokouší vymezit a zmapovat historii cyklistického aktivismu ve světě optikou emancipačních hnutí. Blíže se zaměřuje na cyklistické hnutí ve Velké Británii a České republice. Podle základního srovnání cyklistických hnutí v obou zemích jsou blíže srovnávány paralelní části cyklistického hnutí, kterými jsou pravidelně konané cyklojízdy. Velkou Británii zastupuje grassroot hnutí Critical Mass a Českou republiku zastupuje občanské sdružení Auto*mat. Text obsahuje i popis průběhu cyklojízd v obou zemích, které ilustrují jednoznačnou odlišnost, která je blíže rozebrána ve srovnávací analýze. Základní rovinou srovnání je organizační struktura, která má společně s historickým kontextem a stavem environmentálních hnutí vliv na další roviny analýzy, jimiž jsou myšlenkové základy a sociální status účastníků cyklojízd. Srovnání obou hnutí na základě míry participace účastníků cyklojízd pak nabízí zajímavé zamyšlení nad důsledky organizační struktury na podobu environmentálního hnutí.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to specify and to map the history of cycling activism around the world in terms of emancipatory movements. It is focused on the cycling movements in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic. According to the basic comparison between cycling movements, there are compared the parallel parts of the cycling movements represented here by the regular bicycle rides. The United Kingdom is represented by the grassroots movement Critical Mass and the Czech Republic by the non-governmental non-profit organization Auto*mat. Then, the work describes the process of the bike rides in both countries, which draws the clear distinction between them based on the comparative analysis. The core of the comparison is the organizational structure, which influences, along with historical context and a state of environmental movements, other aspects of analysis including basic ideas and social status of bike ride participants. Indeed, the comparison between both movements based on participatory rate of the bike riders offers the interesting reflection of the consequences of the organizational structure for a form of environmental movement.
