The impact of the pandemic on cultural life in the first quarter of the 20th century in Czechoslovakia

Abstract:

Theme of diploma thesis is - Impact of pandemic on cultural life in the first quarter of 20th century in area of Czechoslovakia. Thesis deals with the issues of big worldwide pandemic in years 1918-1920 and her influence on cultural life with accent on area of Czechoslovakia. Its focus is to provide compact view on period of spanish flu in the context of culture from the avaible sources. For a better understanding of the topic, the introduction will be devoted to the mentioning important historic events and their influence in the first quarter of 20th century over our society. For example the end of World War I - 11 November 1918, formation and creation of first Czechoslovak Republic - 28 October 1918 and so on. Subsequently, the thesis continues with researching impact of spanish flu on financing at culture, functioning at culture, or organization of cultural events in stated period in our area. In conclusion, the diploma thesis summarizes the current findings and compares similarity and differentness cultural life in that time with cultural life in the present pandemic situation.

Abstract:

Téma diplomovej práce znie – Dopad pandémie na kultúrny život v prvej štvrtine 20. storočia na území Československa. Práca je zameraná na problematiku veľkej svetovej pandémie v rokoch 1918-1920 a jej vplyv na kultúrny život, s dôrazom na prostredie Československa. Jej cieľom je podať z dostupných zdrojov, sumárny pohľad na obdobie poznačené Španielskou chrípkou, v kontexte kultúry. Pre lepšie porozumenie podmienok fungovania kultúry v Československu v tomto období, sa úvod práce pokúsi explikovať všetky dôležité historické udalosti, ktoré ovplyvňovali v prvej štvrtine 20. storočia našu spoločnosť. Akými sú napríklad koniec 1. Svetovej vojny 11. novembra. 1918, formovanie a vznik prvej Československej republiky 28. októbra. 1918 atď. Neskôr práca pokračuje skúmaním dopadu španielskej chrípky na financovanie kultúry, na samotné fungovanie kultúrnych inštitúcií, či usporadúvanie kultúrnych programov v danom období, v našom prostredí. V závere sumarizuje priebežné zistenia a porovnáva podobnosť a odlišnosť kultúrneho života v tej dobe s kulturným životom v súčasnej pandemickej situácii.
