Původní představa zombie pochází ze západoafrického náboženství voodoo, které se postupem času rozšířilo především do oblasti Karibiku. Zombie, tedy nemrtvý otrok určený pro namáhavou fyzickou práci, zde figuruje jako postava podléhající moci čaroděje (bokor) a do jisté míry také jako nástroj kolektivní sociální kontroly. Abstract:
The zombie concept came from the West African Voodoo religion. Late rit spreaded mainly across the Caribbean, but there is a huge Voodoo community in Louisiana too. Zombie (an undead slave esigned for strenuous physical work) figures here as a character subordinate to the power of the sorcerer (Bokor) and to some extent also as an instrument of social control.
