Femininity and Death in Arthurian Legends

Abstract:

Ačkoliv mezi odbornou veřejností nepanuje jednotný názor na to, zda král Artuš byl skutečnou historickou postavou nebo pouhým produktem mýtů a legend, je stále považován za jednu z nejslavnějších postav anglosaské kultury. Symbol smrti je často zmiňovaným tématem odborných článků, zejména Artušova smrt bývá nezřídka centrem pozornosti odborníků. Podobně i ženské postavy artušovských legend se těší velké oblibě akademiků. I přes značnou popularitu těchto témat zůstává stále málo odborných studií o ženách a smrti ve vzájemných souvislostech. Tato práce zkoumá oba výše zmíněné fenomény – smrt a ženskost v Maloryho díle Le Morte Darthur. Pomocí literární analýzy se autorka snaží zachytit důležité momenty v Maloryho práci, kde žena a smrt hrají významnou roli. Důraz je obzvlášť kladen na situace, kdy žena vystupuje jako bezprostřední nositel smrti nebo pomocník vražedného rytíře. Výsledky této práce naznačují, že ženy často hrají negativní roli v situacích, kdy se jedná o něčí smrt. Ačkoliv žena obvykle nevystupuje v tak významném postavení jako rytíř, můžeme najít i několik případů, kdy žena sama jedná jako zabiják a přináší smrt svou vlastní rukou.

Abstract:

Although historians still argue whether King Arthur was a real historical figure or just a product of myths and legends, he remains one of the most famous characters of Anglo-Saxon culture. Much has been written about symbols of death which appear in various Arthurian legends. Especially the topic of Arthur’s death seems to be very frequent in academic journals. Similarly, Arthurian women tend to be often repeated topic among scholars. Despite evident interest in either decease or females surrounding King Arthur’s figure, there is startlingly little written about the two subjects appearing together. This thesis deals with both the phenomena mentioned above – death and femininity in Thomas Malory’s work Le Morte Darthur. Using the method of literary analysis, the author tries to depict important moments in the book where a woman and death play significant roles. Special attention is paid to the moments where a woman is an immediate agent of death, either as a murderer or an assistant to the murdering knight. The results of this study show that women frequently play a negative role in the situations of somebody’s death. Even though a woman’s contribution to death is usually less significant than a knight’s role, we can find a few females who bring death with their own hands.
