The Syntactic Functions of the Infinitive Used in the Journalistic Functional Style of the Contemporary Spanish Language

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to investigate the syntactic functions of infinitives and their use in contemporary Spanish journalistic style. This thesis focused on the number of incidences of infinitive and their functions within the Spanish newspapers EL País and El Mundo and also on their qualities. In the theoretical part of the thesis we have gathered basic information about syntactic functions of the Spanish infinitives and have created classification in the nominal and verbal infinitives. At the same time we have gathered the linguistic corpus by selection the texts from 3 different types of journalist genres of both newspapers in the period over one month in the year of 2024. In the practical part we have focused on the quantity of incidences of the infinitive in the exact newspapers within specific journalist genre. We have worked with three types of the genres, editorial, news and interview which we have investigated within each of the newspaper separately. The amount of the incidence we have recorded in the tables. Another investigation we have focused on was the quality of the functions which we have shown and commented on the specific examples. Our research revealed that 75% of the total amount of infinitive belong to the verbal infinitive and only 25% belong to the nominal which means, the group of infinitives that retains the characteristics and function of a verb predominates over the smaller group of nominal infinitives that fulfill the role and the qualities of a noun. Furthermore within verbal and nominal infinitives there are numerous subgroups of functions which further divide and classify those infinitives and that they can be full members within both nominal and verbal syntactic groups.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zkoumat syntaktické funkce infinitivů a jejich použití v současném španělském novinářském stylu. Práce byla zaměřena na četnost výskytu infinitivů a jejich funkcí v rámci španělských periodik El Mundo a El País a také na vlastnosti těchto funkcí. V teoretické části jsme shromáždili základní informace o syntaktických funkcích španělského infinitivu a ty jsme klasifikovali v rámci infinitivu nominálního a verbálního. Zároveň jsme shromáždili/vytvořili jazykový korpus, excerpcí 3 novinářských žánrů obou periodik za období jednoho měsíce roku 2024. V praktické části jsme se zaměřili na četnost výskytu infinitivu v daném periodiku v rámci konkrétního novinářského žánru. Pracovali jsme celkem se třemi druhy těchto žánrů, s úvodníkem, zprávou a rozhovorem, který jsme zkoumali v rámci každého z obou periodik. Množství výskytů jsme zaznamenávali do tabulek. Dále jsme se zaobírali také vlastnostmi těchto funkcí, které jsme komentovali na konkrétních příkladech. Následným výzkumem bylo zjištěno, že 75 % z celkového počtu infinitivů tvoří skupina verbálních infinitivů a pouze 25% náleží do infinitivů nominálních. Tedy, že převažuje skupina infinitivů, která si zachovává vlastnosti a funkci slovesa oproti menší skupině infinitivů nominálních, plnících roli a vykazujících vlastnosti podstatného jména. Dále také, že v rámci infinitivů verbálních a nominálních existují četné podskupiny funkcí, které dané infinitivy dále dělí a klasifikují a že tedy mohou být plnohodnotnými členy v rámci jmenných i slovesných syntaktických skupin.
