Quantitative determination of iron oxidation state in tourmaline-supergroup minerals using electron microprobe

Abstract:

Flank metoda je analytický postup využívající elektronovou mikrosondu ke kvantifi-kaci oxidačního stavu v pevných látkách. Tato metoda, která je založena na měření intenzity RTG záření ve dvou spektrálních pozicích (FeLα a FeLβ flank), ve kterých se projevuje největší rozdíl mezi emisními spektry Fe2+ a Fe3+, získanými úhlovým skenem na TAP monochromátoru. Na základě poměru RTG intenzit ve flank pozicích, známého poměru Fe3+/∑Fe a také celkového obsahu Fe lze odvodit závislost použi-telnou pro kvantifikaci Fe3+/∑Fe v neznámých vzorcích. Cílem této práce je vypraco-vání metodiky stanovení oxidačního stavu Fe v minerálech superskupiny turmalínu pomocí elektronové mikrosondy. Kalibrace flank metody je založena na zjištění závislosti poměru RTG intenzit v FeLα a FeLβ flank pozicích u přírodních turmalínů s nízkým obsahem Fe3+ a jejich žíhaných (700°C) ekvivalentů s plně oxidovaným Fe. Turmalínové standardy byly vybrány tak, aby pokrývaly rozsah od ~8 do ~20 hm. % FeOtot. Zastoupení Fe3+ ve standardech bylo měřeno pomocí Mössbauerovy spektroskopie, byl u přírodních vzorků zjištěn nízký obsah Fe3+ (do 6,5 rel. %), u žíhaných 100 rel. % Fe3+. Jako op-timální analytické podmínky pro kvantifikaci oxidačního stavu Fe byly vyhodnoceny 15 kV a 50 nA. Pomocí uvedených parametrů definujících kalibrační prostor byl odvozen vztah pro výpočet obsahu Fe3+/∑Fe v turmalínech. Správnost odvozeného vztahu a také přesnost metodiky byla testována na sérii přírodních turmalínů s variabilním za-stoupením Fe3+. Měření kontrolních vzorků proběhlo na dvou TAP monochromáto-rech. Hodnoty Fe3+/∑Fe vypočtené pomocí odvozeného vztahu pro oba spektrome-try jsou srovnatelné se známými daty z Mössbauerovy spektroskopie nebo s publikovanými hodnotami. Chyba měření byla stanovena na ~8 % pro turmalíny s obsahem ~8 hm. % FeOtot, a na ~4 % u turmalínů s obsahem ~20 hm. % FeOtot. Se snižujícím se obsahem FeOtot roste odchylka měření, a také odchylka stanovení obsa-hu Fe3+/∑Fe. Odvozená metodika pro kvantifikaci valenčního stavu Fe je použitelná ideálně pro turmalíny nad 5 hm. % FeOtot.

Abstract:

The flank method is an analytical tool developed for quantitative determination of the Fe oxidation state in solid phases using electron probe microanalyzer. This method is based on the measurement of the X-ray intensity at specific spectral positions (FeLα a FeLβ flank) using a TAP monochromator, where the largest difference between emission X-ray spectra of Fe2+ and Fe3+ phases occurs. The relations among a ratio of X-ray intensity collected on flank position, known Fe3+/∑Fe and FeOtot content can be used for the derivation of an equation for Fe3+/∑Fe calculation in the unknown samples. The goal of this thesis is to develop the methodology for quantitative determination of the Fe oxidation state in minerals of tourmaline supergroup using the electron probe microanalyzer. The calibration of the flank method is based on measurement of FeLα/FeLβ flank X-ray intensities ratio on natural tourmaline standards with low Fe3+ content and on their annealed (at 700°C) and fully oxidized equivalents. The standards were chosen to cover the range from ~8 to ~20 wt.% FeOtot. The content of Fe3+ in stand-ards were determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy and revealed ≤6.5 rel.% of Fe3+ in natural standards and 100 rel.% of Fe3+ in annealed ones. An accelerating voltage of 15 kV and beam current of 50 nA were selected as optimal analytical conditions for Fe3+/∑Fe quantification. The equation for Fe3+/∑Fe calculation was derived from the parameters defin-ing the calibration space for the tourmalines. The accuracy of the calibration and the derived equation for Fe3+/∑Fe was evaluated on the series of natural tourmalines of known and variable Fe3+ content. The measurement was parallelly tested on two TAP crystals, and the results are comparable with the data obtained from Mössbauer spectroscopy. The analytical error was estimated to ~8 % for tourmalines of ~8 wt. % FeOtot, and ~4 % for tourmalines of ~20 wt. % FeOtot. The lower FeOtot in tour-malines, the higher standard deviation of calculated Fe3+/∑Fe. The developed methodology is applicable for tourmalines >5 wt. % FeOtot.
