The Parkland Shooting: Response and Counter Response

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the mass shooting that took place at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, in February of 2018. In preparation for an analysis of what made the response to this shooting different, the thesis examines the restrictions and availability of firearm in the United States, the instances of shootings in high schools, other, specific cases of shootings, and of course the Parkland shooting. These cases are compared to determine what was different about Parkland, the response that followed by student organizers, and the media and government response. What could have been a watershed moment for gun control in the United States, instead became just another mass shooting swept under the carpet of American history.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá střelbou na Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School v Parklandu, ke které došlo v únoru roku 2018. Aby bylo možno zanalyzovat čím se odezva na tuto událost lišila od podobných případů, tato práce zkoumá i restrikce a dostupnost střelných zbraní v USA, četné případy střeleb na středních školách s konkrétními případy, kdy bude kladen největší důraz na střelbu v Parklandu. Porovnám tyto případy, abych zjistila, v čem se Parkland lišil, jaká byla odezva student, médií a vládních představitelů. Jak se z události, která měla potenciál změnit ve Spojených státech přístup ke zbraním, stala pouze další hromadná střelba, zametená pod koberec Americké historie. Práce bude sepsána v anglickém jazyce.
