Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tématem Indiánských rezidenčních škol, které v Kanadě existovaly od konce 19. století do roku 1996, a zkoumá různé způsoby, kterými je dané téma zpracováno ve vybraných uměleckých dílech původních obyvatel. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních části. Teoretická část práce se zaobírá obecným představením historie Kanadských rezidenčních škol, popisuje podmínky, ve kterých domorodé děti žily, stejně jako dopady, které tyto vzdělávací instituce měly na komunity původních obyvatel v Kanadě. Analytická část práce dále zkoumá dvě literární díla a jeden film domorodých autorů, která řeší právě téma rezidenčních škol: román Kiss of the Fur Queen (1998) od dramatika a spisovatele Cree původu Tomsona Highwaye; memoár They Called Me Number One: Secrets and Survival at an Indian Residential School (2013) náčelnice Xat’sull First Nation v Soda Creek, Britské Kolumbii Bev Sellars; a film Rhymes for Young Ghouls (2013) od spisovatele a režiséra Mikmackého původu Jeffa Barnabyho. Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat způsoby, jakými je téma Indiánských rezidenčních škol zobrazeno ve dvou literárních a jednom filmovém díle původních obyvatel a ukázat, jak se narativy v těchto daných dílech liší. Analýzy dospěly k závěru, že domorodí autoři využívají k zobrazení tématu Indiánských rezidenčních škol a dopadů způsobených právě těmito školami, různorodé literární postupy a narativy. Mimo to, tato práce také poukazuje na důležitost domorodého umění a na fakt, že je to právě domorodé umění, které pomáhá mnoha původním obyvatelům se vypořádat se zážitky s rezidenčních škol.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the ways in which the Indian Residential School System, that existed in Canada from the late 19th century until the year 1996, is depicted in the various Indigenous artistic media. As such, the thesis is divided into two major parts. The theoretical, part of the thesis deals with the introduction of the historical background of Canadian residential schools, and it outlines the conditions in which Indigenous children lived as well as the impacts these educational institutions has had on Indigenous communities in Canada. The analytical part of the thesis then examines three Indigenous works of art of different media, which addresses the theme of the very residential schools; a novel Kiss of the Fur Queen (1998) written by the Cree playwright and novelist Tomson Highway; a life writing narrative They Called Me Number One: Secrets and Survival at an Indian Residential School (2013) by Bev Sellars, the chief of the Xat’sull First Nation at Soda Creek, British Columbia; and the film Rhymes for Young Ghouls (2013) directed by the Mi’kmaq writer, film editor, and director Jeff Barnaby. The goal of this thesis was to explore the ways in which the issue of Indian Residential School System is depicted in the selected works of literature and film made by the Indigenous authors, and to demonstrate how do the residential schools narratives in these works of art differ. The analyses conclude that the Indigenous authors apply diverse literary approaches and narratives in depicting the Indian Residential School System and trauma inflicted on Indigenous people not only by the residential schools but also by the overall colonialism. Moreover, the thesis also demonstrates the importance of Indigenous art and the ways it helps many individuals to deal with the residential schools experiences.
