The role of empathy in the secondary transfer effect of contact with people with disabilities on attitudes towards Roma minority

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem kontaktu s lidmi se zdravotním postižením na postoje vůči lidem s postižením a sekundárním přenosem vlivu kontaktu s postiženými na postoje vůči Romům, kteří v české společnosti představují segregovanou skupinu s vysokou mírou stigmatu. Dosavadní studie ukázaly, že kontakt s jednou nečlenskou skupinou může pozitivně ovlivňovat postoje k jiným skupinám, se kterými je kontakt omezený. Do výzkumu jsme zařadily nejen dosud testovaný vliv pozitivního meziskupinového kontaktu, ale také v současnosti málo prozkoumaný vliv negativního kontaktu. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 428 středoškolských studentů. Výsledky potvrdily, že kvantita i kvalita kontaktu s lidmi se zdravotním postižením ovlivňují postoje vůči postiženým. Zjistily jsme, že častý a pozitivní kontakt s lidmi s postižením zlepšuje postoje vůči stigmatizované menšině Romů a naopak negativní kontakt s postiženými vede k negativnějším postojům vůči Romům. Ve výzkumu jsme se zaměřily na roli dispoziční a situační (kognitivní a afektivní) empatie v primárním a sekundárním přenosu vlivu meziskupinového kontaktu na postoje. Výsledky diplomové práce dokládají přínos pozitivního kontaktu s postiženými na postoje vůči postiženým a Romům prostřednictvím zvýšení empatie pociťované ke stigmatizovaným skupinám. Zároveň však varují před vlivem negativního kontaktu, který se prostřednictvím snížené empatie odráží nejen ve zhoršených postojích vůči lidem s postižením, ale i v postojích vůči další stigmatizované menšině.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the effect of intergroup contact with people with disabilities on attitudes toward disabled people and secondary transfer effect of contact with people with disabilities on attitudes toward Roma – in Czech society highly stigmatized and segregated minority. Previous studies showed that intergroup contact with one outgroup can positively influence attitudes toward other outgroups with whom contact is limited. We investigated not only the previously established effect of positive intergroup contact but also the so far neglected effect of negative intergroup contact. The sample consisted of 428 high school students. The results confirmed that both quantity and quality of contact with people with disability had effect on attitudes toward the disabled. We found that frequent and positive contact with disabled people also improved attitudes toward the stigmatized Roma minority. On the contrary, negative contact with disabled led to more negative attitudes towards Roma. In the study, we focused also on the role of dispositional and situational (cognitive and affective) empathy in primary and secondary transfer effect of intergroup contact. The results of the thesis illustrate the benefits of positive contact with people with disabilities for attitudes towards disabled and Roma through increased empathy with the stigmatized groups. At the same time, they warn against the effect of negative contact associating not only with worse attitudes toward people with disabilities but also with worse attitudes toward another stigmatized minority through reduced empathy.
