Between Ideal and Reality: The Image of the Pilgrim to the Holy Land in the Work of Otto of Freising

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá obrazem křížových výprav v díle kronikáře a biskupa Oty z Freisingu (c. 1112 až 1158). Snaží se také zachytit kontrast mezi ideálem poutě do Svaté země, který v Otově Historii aneb O dvou obcích (Chronica sive Historia de duabus civitatibus) tvoří idealizovaná první kruciáta, a tvrdou realitou kruciáty druhé, které se Ota sám zúčastnil a popsal ji na stránkách svého druhého spisu – ve Skutcích císaře Fridricha Barbarossy (Gesta Friderici Imperatoris). Důležitou součástí práce je také hypotéza, že Otův drsný zážitek z katastrofální druhé křížové výpravy zpětně ovlivnil jeho popis kruciáty první, který je dnes zachován jen na stránkách Otova přepracování jeho původní, avšak nedochované Historie. Nedílnou součástí práce je pak také kapitola o stavu poznání o Otovi z Freisingu a jeho díle, která ukazuje, že problematice Otova pohledu na poutě a poutníky do Svaté země se zatím nikdo systematicky nevěnoval. Další dvě kapitoly se pak zabývají obecně Otovým životem a dílem; výše naznačená problematika obrazu křížových výprav pak tvoří kapitolu poslední a nejdůležitější.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis deals with the image of the crusades to the Holy Land in the work of the chronicler and bishop Otto of Freising (c. 1112–1158). It also tries to capture the contrast between the ideal of the pilgrimage to the Holy Land as depicted in Otto’s The Two Cities: A Chronicle of Universal History to the Year 1146 A.D. (Chronica sive Historia de duabus civitatibus) by the idealised First Crusade, and the harsh reality of the Second Crusade which Otto participated in and which he described in his other work – in The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa (Gesta Friderici Imperatoris). An important part in this thesis is reserved for a hypothesis claiming that Otto’s harsh experience from the disastrous Second Crusade additionally influenced his description of the First Crusade which is nowadays extant only in Otto’s revision of his original, but to our days not preserved The Two Cities. An overview of the current state of research about Otto of Fresing and his work creates also an inseparable part of this thesis because it shows that nobody so far has systematically dealt with this field concerning Otto of Freising’s view on the crusades. The other two chapters deal generally with Otto’s life and literary work; the final and most important chapter is dedicated to the aforementioned area concerning the image of the crusades in Otto’s work.
