Methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus in the Czech Republic and Europe

Abstract:

The objective of this retrospective study was to analyze the dynamics of the occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the Czech Republic and Europe and to compare individual data. Data were obtained from the University Hospital Brno for the period from 2018 to 2022. The data were obtained from the hospital information system, with the number of positive MRSA cultures being monitored each month during the five-year period. Statistical methods were used to analyze trends and seasonality, including the calculation of average monthly occurrences and standard deviations. Overall, 910 MRSA cases were recorded during the study period, with significant annual and seasonal fluctuations. The highest occurrence was recorded in 2020 (205 cases), while the lowest was in 2019 (147 cases). The analysis revealed significant seasonal patterns, with the highest number of cases in the winter and spring months, indicating the influence of respiratory infections and the use of antibiotics. An exception was the year 2020, when the summer months showed an atypically high occurrence, which may be associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study confirm that the occurrence of MRSA in a hospital setting is dynamic, with significant seasonal trends. The findings point to the continuous need for rigorous monitoring, effective use of antibiotics, and strengthening of preventive measures to limit the spread of MRSA. The COVID-19 pandemic had a clear impact on the distribution patterns of MRSA, highlighting the importance of public health adaptability and infection protocols in response to global health crises.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto retrospektívnej štúdie bolo analyzovať dynamiku výskytu meticilín rezistentného Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) v ČR a Európe a jednotlivé dáta porovnať. V rámci štúdie boli získané dáta z Fakultnej nemocnice Brno z obdobia rokov 2018 až 2022. Dáta boli získané z nemocničného informačného systému, pričom bol sledovaný počet pozitívnych kultúr MRSA každý mesiac počas päťročného obdobia. Pre analýzu trendov a sezónnosti boli použité štatistické metódy, vrátane výpočtu priemerných mesačných výskytov a smerodajných odchýlok. Celkovo bolo počas študovaného obdobia zaznamenaných 910 prípadov MRSA s výraznými ročnými a sezónnymi fluktuáciami. Najvyšší výskyt bol zaznamenaný v roku 2020 (205 prípadov), zatiaľ čo najnižší v roku 2019 (147 prípadov). Analýza odhalila významné sezónne vzory s najvyšším počtom prípadov v zimných a jarných mesiacoch, čo naznačuje vplyv respiračných infekcií a užívanie antibiotík. Výnimkou bol rok 2020, kedy letné mesiace ukázali atypický vysoký výskyt, čo môže byť spojené s pandémiou COVID-19. Výsledky tejto štúdie potvrdzujú, že výskyt MRSA v nemocničnom prostredí je dynamický s výraznými sezónnymi trendmi. Zistenia poukazujú na neustálu potrebu rigorózneho sledovania, efektívneho využívania antibiotík a posilnenie preventívnych opatrení k obmedzeniu šírenia MRSA. Pandémia COVID-19 mala zreteľný dopad na distribučné vzorce MRSA, čo zdôrazňuje význam adaptability verejného zdravia a infekčných protokolov v reakcii na globálne zdravotnícke krízy.
