Exotic Flora and Fauna in the Travelogue by Christopher Harant of Polžice and Bezdružice

Abstract:

Kniha Kryštofa Haranta z Polžic a Bezdružic představuje v kontextu českého cestopisného psaní předbělohorské doby mimořádné dílo. Dokončena a tiskem vydána byla v roce 1608, deset let po autorově návratu z jistě namáhavé cesty. Již tato časová souvislost naznačuje, že výsledná obsáhlá kniha není bezprostředním svodem výrazných zážitků navrátivšího se poutníka, nýbrž dílem, jež bylo promýšleno a koncipováno jako učenecký spis pojednávající o (stále) přitažlivých zemích biblického východu. O encyklopedickém charakteru Harantova spisu svědčí mj. i skutečnost, že do svého díla zařadil výklad o vzdálenějších asijských zemích, které nicméně během své cesty nenavštívil, ale též i autorova zmínka o tom, že měl při psaní cestopisu možnost studovat popisované jevy v proslulé pražské kunstkomoře Rudolfa II. Práce si tedy klade za cíl posuzovat studovaný pramen jako žánrově specifický text a analyzovat jeho encyklopedický rozměr. Na příkladu Harantova popisu skutečností z oblasti živé přírody (3. a 4. kapitola) budu usilovat o zasazení studovaného díla do středověké, případně humanisticky orientované raně novověké tradice popisného výkladu o přírodě (historia naturalis).

Abstract:

This bachelor´s thesis analyzes a book by Christopher Harant of Polžice and Bezružice. His book, in context of Czech travel writings of the pre-White Mountain period, represents a remarkable work. It was finished and published in 1608, ten years after author´s return from his difficult journey. This temporal link alone implies that the final comprehensive book is not just an immediate summary of strong experiences of a returned wanderer, but an elaborated and well thought-out scholar file dealing with attractive countries of the Biblical east. The fact that Harant included a commentary on remoter Asian countries he did not even visit, indicates the encyclopedic character of his file, same as the fact that he mentioned he had the option to study the described phenomena in the famous Prague cabinet of couriosities of Rudolf II. The purpose of this thesis is to review the mentioned source as a genre specific text and to analyze its encyclopedic extent. With the example of Harant´s description of facts from the field of live nature (3rd and 4th chapter) the thesis will attempt to place the work into the medieval or humanistic oriented early modern period traditions of descriptive interpretation about nature (historia naturalis).
