Adopting Valency Frames of Adjectives Derived by Suffix -telný: a Corpus Analysis

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá přejímáním valenčních rámců mezi adjektivy derivovanými sufixem -telný a odpovídajícími základovými slovesy. V českém prostředí se uplatňují tři různě přístupy k valenci: sémantický, syntaktický a modifikovaná valenční teorie; všem zmíněným přístupům se práce věnuje. Cílem práce je na základě materiálu synchronních korpusů (SYN2015, syn v3) popsat mechanismus přejímání valenčních rámců (tj. valenčních pozic a typických doplnění) a určit, které faktory se na něm podílejí. Výchozí valenční rámce sloves byly získány z valenčních slovníků Vallex a Verbalex. Mezi zkoumané faktory, jež se mohou na přejímání valenčních rámců podílet, byly zahrnuty: frekvence adjektiva, struktura výchozího valenčního rámce, obligatornost či potenciálnost výchozí valenční pozice, počet aktantů valenčního rámce a forma přejímané pozice. Z uvedených faktorů spoluovlivňuje přejetí valenčního rámce frekvence, počet aktantů a forma pozice (především pád). Obligatorní pozice nejsou přejímány častěji než potenciální. Valenční rámce jsou tvořeny nepravidelně; valenční rámec derivovaného adjektiva je ovlivněn kromě výše uvedených faktorů především sémantickou nezávislostí adjektiva a jeho zapojením do existujících kolokací.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis deals with adopting valency frames within adjectives derived by suffix -telný and base verbs corresponding to these adjectives. Generally, it is possible to distinguish three different approaches to the valency in the Czech linguistic: semantic approach, syntactic approach as well as modified valency theory; all these approaches are described in the thesis. The aim of this thesis is to clarify the process of adopting valency frames (i. e. valency participants and free modifications) on the basis of the linguistic material of Czech synchronic corpora (SYN2015, syn v3). Moreover, the another aim of the thesis is to describe the factors which can influence the process mentioned above. Original valency frames of verbs were obtained from valency lexicons Vallex and VerbaLex. The research is focused on these factors: the frequency of adjectives, the structure of the valency frames, obligatory or potential character of the valency positions, the number of valency positions in the verbal valency frame and finally, the form of the position. To sum up, it is the frequency of adjectives, the number of valency positions in the verbal valency frame and the form of the position (especially the case) which modify the formation of adjective valency frame most of all. Contrary to former expectations, the obligatory positions are not adopted more often than potential ones. There is a lot of irregularities while making up the adjective valency frames. Both the semantic independence of adjectives and adjectiveʼs collocations influence also the process.
