The Kalam Cosmological Argument for the Existence of God in the Contemporary Debate

Abstract:

Problematice kosmologického důkazu bylo v českém prostředí věnováno hned několik monografií, stranou pozornosti našich autorů však zůstala tzv. kalámská varianta důkazu, vycházející z nemožnosti nekonečné časové řady. Práce se pokusí shrnout zejm. angloamerické diskuse o kalámském kosmologickém důkazu, mj. sledovat diskuse kolem obhajoby důkazu z pera Williama L. Craiga. Objasněn bude vztah kalámského důkazu k té variantě kosmologického důkazu, jež se opírá o kontingenci existence empiricky vnímatelných jsoucen (a jejímž nejvýznamnějším stoupencem byl v dějinách filosofie T. Akvinský); rozebrány budou odlišné a shodné předpoklady obou variací důkazu. S využitím příslušných poznatků pak bude zhodnocena soudobá česká diskuse o kosmologickém důkazu.

Abstract:

Despite the fact that Czech authors have published some books about the cosmological argument, they ignore the mere fact that there is so called kalam cosmological argument based on the impossibility of the infinite regress or events or moments.In my text I summary the debate about the kalam cosmological argument in English literature, i.a.about the argument of William L. Craig. It will be explained what are the differences and similarities between the kalam cosmological argument and the contingency argument, which is based od the contingency of the existence of things we can perceive through the use of one of the senses. On this background I examine Czech works concerning the cosmological argument. I adress the question, which type of cosmological proof is more persuasive and the question if there is not hidden assumption of one type of argument in another, and if so, which type is primary in this regard.
