The Attitudes of Helmut Kohl's Governments Towards the Eastern Enlargement of the European Union

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je odpovědět na otázku, jak se vyvíjela německá Europapolitik v době vlád Helmuta Kohla a jak ovlivnila východní rozšíření Evropské unie. Časově práce pokrývá období od sjednocení Německa v roce 1990 po konec posledního volebního období Kohlova kabinetu v roce 1998. Práce se věnuje vývoji německé politiky východního rozšiřování, konfliktu politiky prohlubování a rozšiřování na počátku devadesátých let a vlivu spolkového kancléře a spolkové vlády na rozšiřovací proces v EU. V teoretické části práce představuje dva základní přístupy k rozšiřování EU – racionalismus a konstruktivismus a jejich pohled na koncept státní identity a jejího vlivu na politiku rozšiřování.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to answer the question regarding how the German Europapolitik developed during Helmut Kohl’s government and how it influenced the eastern enlargement of the European Union. This thesis covers a time period beginning with the German reunification in 1990 to the end of Kohl’s last term in 1998. This thesis deals with the development of the German eastern enlargement policy, with the conflict between the policies of deepening and widening in the early 90's and with the impact of the Federal Chancellor and the Federal Government on the enlargement process in the EU. In its theoretical part, this thesis introduces two basic approaches to the EU-enlargement – rationalism and constructivism as well as their views on the concept of the state identity and its impact on the enlargement policy.
