The position of the Czech Republic within the EU

Abstract:

This diploma thesis analyses the position of the Czech Republic within the European Union, its historical, political, economic, and cultural factors that have influenced its role in the EU. The emphasis is made on the relationships with the EU, on impact of the key EU policies and initiatives on the Czech Republic. The research analysis starts with a historical overview of European integration, considering the Eurozone and Schengen Agreement and other European treaties. In addition, the study examines internal factors that influence Czech policy towards the EU, such as political dynamics and public opinion. This thesis assesses the impact of the Czech Republic's EU membership on its economy, politics, trade relations and regional development. It also looks at the wider implications of EU membership for a country's sovereignty and identity. The results suggest that the Czech Republic performs above average in the long-term economically in comparison to other member states, specifically in terms of the average annual GDP increase, inflation increase and unemployment rates. Furthermore, the Czech Republic remains vulnerable to loss of sovereignty, culture and brain drain effects due to high influx of migrants which maintain certain industries of the country. Despite this evidence, the Czech government maintains its position of promoting inclusion and aligning its position with the stance of the EU Commission and government.
